The 2024 BMW 5 Series gets a complete overhaul that adds more space, cutting-edge tech features, and added horsepower to the eighth generation of the Bavarian automaker’s midsize 5-seat luxury sedan. Initially, this new 5 Series will be available in three main configurations: 530i, 530i xDrive, and 540i xDrive. The latter two have all-wheel drive (AWD). A plug-in hybrid is expected, and an all-electric i5 is on the way.
Motivating the base 530i is a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that sends 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. According to BMW, the 530i xDrive hits 60 mph in 5.8 seconds.
This drops to just 4.4 seconds in the 540i xDrive, which has a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine under its hood, a mild-hybrid powertrain that produces 375 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque.
We’ve always been big fans of how the 5 Series rides and handles, particularly since it faces strong competition in the form of the Genesis G80, Audi A6, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. How does the new 2024 BMW 5 Series stack up?
Let’s find out.
Passenger Room and Comfort
BMW increased the length, width, and wheelbase of the newly updated 5 Series. An extra inch of wheelbase should benefit rear legroom, and we fully expect the 2024 5 Series to have a balanced and supremely comfortable ride in all types of situations.
Standard features include front sport seats, automatic climate control, a tilt-and-slide sunroof, and paddle shifters for the 8-speed gearbox. For the 2024 model year, the 5 Series comes with vegan-friendly Veganza leather upholstery covering its dash, door panels, and seats. Genuine leather remains an option.
Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote start are part of the Convenience Package offered on the 530i and 530i xDrive. Even more seat-centric coddling is afforded by the Luxury Seating package, which adds ventilation to the front seats, and heated rear seats.
The new 5 also has an available panoramic Sky Lounge roof. This giant fixed glass panel is 33 inches long and 32 inches wide.
Features and Tech
This is one area where the previous 5 Series was starting to fall behind its more tech-savvy competitors. That’s no longer the case for 2024.
When you slide behind the steering wheel of the new 5 Series, you’re greeted by an expansive 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster mounted alongside a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen.
The giant curved panel is extremely modern-looking yet also user-friendly. It runs BMW’s latest iDrive 8.5 infotainment software, which is capable of over-the-air updates. Standard tech touches include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and a Harman Kardon audio system.
Want more? You’re in luck because there’s plenty on offer in the 2024 BMW 5 Series. The AirConsole in-vehicle gaming system allows occupants to play video games using their smartphones as controls — but only when the car is in Park, thankfully.
Driving Assistance Professional allows hands-free driving (on certain roads) at speeds up to 85 mph using the Highway Assistant. It also comes with a lane change feature that monitors the driver’s eyes. If the system suggests it’s safe to make a lane change, and the driver glances at the side mirror adjacent to the intended lane of travel, Active Lane Change will then complete the maneuver.
And for those averse to tricky parking situations, the new 5 comes with a self-park system standard. It’s capable of parking the 5 Series in both perpendicular and parallel parking spots.
Materials and Design
We’ve mentioned some of the various seating and upholstery options offered in the 2024 BMW 5 Series. The vegan-friendly Veganza trim is standard, though genuine leather remains available. A mix of Veganza and suede-like Alcantara upholstery is offered as part of the M Sport Package.
The available BMW Interaction Bar might sound like a friendly place to grab a beer and appetizers. In reality, it’s an upgraded ambient lighting system that comes with more touch-sensitive controls for heating and ventilation.
The heating and air conditioning vents also deserve mention. They’re positioned on the dashboard but are so cleverly designed they’re tough to see.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
We know the BMW 5 Series has gotten a substantial boost in comfort and technology. Sheer space is still important, however, and this new 5 Series has about the same size trunk as its predecessor. There is 18.4 cubic feet of volume, and a 40/20/40 split-folding rear seatback makes it easier to carry bulkier items.
