Let’s Take a Look Inside the 2024 Jeep Wrangler

Some say a picture is worth a thousand words. That has never been truer than with the 2024 Jeep Wrangler. A walk around this storied off-road beast sends chills up the spine of any dedicated or aspiring adventurer with dreams of sand dancing or boulder crawling. Despite competition from other competent 4x4s like the Ford Bronco and Toyota 4Runner, the Wrangler has a pedigree forged through decades of off-roading and even a world war.

Jeep offers the Wrangler in 2- or 4-door configurations, in hardtop and soft-top variants, with multiple 4-wheel-drive systems and four — count them — four powertrain options, one of which is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The plethora of trim levels elevate either off-road capability or luxury, and sometimes both. Beyond all these factory variations, there are hundreds of aftermarket bits, pieces, and components to further customize your Wrangler. In other words, there is not (and never has been) anything quite like the Jeep Wrangler.

What’s New

In addition to adding the Willys and Rubicon X trim levels, Jeep made multiple exterior and interior upgrades to the Wrangler for 2024. The outside enhancements include a redesigned grille, replacing the exterior mast antenna with one integrated into the windshield, and 10 fresh wheel designs. Inside, Jeep made side curtain airbags standard across the Wrangler lineup. More soft-touch surfaces and a heritage-inspired center stack take the Wrangler a bit upmarket. Jeep also replaced the 5-inch and 7-inch infotainment touchscreens with one measuring 12.3 inches on the diagonal. It commands the latest generation of the Uconnect 5 system, which we argue is one of the best and most user-friendly interfaces in the business.

Passenger Room and Comfort

If you plan on transporting more than you and a front-seat passenger (or require loads of cargo space on a regular basis), we’d steer you toward the 4-door Wrangler. Although we are big fans of the 2-door (especially for off-roading), the 4-door is simply more practical. Moreover, the 2-door seats only four people total, while the 4-door seats five. Regardless of the door count, the removable carpet and drain plugs translate into an interior that can be hosed out.

Whether 2-door or 4-door, the front-seat occupants enjoy plenty of legroom (41.2 inches) and headroom (42.6 inches with the soft top). Manually adjusted seats are standard in lower trims; 12-way power-adjustable seats are available or standard in the upper trims. Off-roaders will appreciate that the power seats are functional even when fording water. Also notable: Every Wrangler comes with at least one USB port. The Sahara trim and higher come with two.

The 4-door Wrangler provides 2.6 inches more rear-seat legroom than the 2-door’s 35.7 inches. In both versions, the second-row seat folds, tumbles, and can be completely removed.

Features and Technology

The 2-door and 4-door Wranglers share three trim levels: Sport, Sport S, and Rubicon. There are few frills attached to the Sport and Sport S. Manual climate control, push-button start, Uconnect 5 infotainment interface, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an 8-speaker audio system cover the Sport. The Sport S adds full-speed forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a few other goodies. Moving up through the rest of the trim levels adds a power top, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, remote start, leather seating, heated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, an upgraded audio system, and navigation.

Although the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid shares many of the traditional Wrangler’s specifications and features, it delivers up to 21 miles of electric-only range. Moreover, the available 4xe Power Box provides four 120-volt outlets with 30 amps of total output that use the 4xe’s battery to power external devices. This is particularly handy at a campsite, worksite, or anywhere else electricity is needed. By the way, the Wrangler 4xe was the best-selling PHEV in 2023.

Materials and Design

First and foremost, Jeep engineered and designed the Wrangler with an eye on off-road competence. This explains an interior that can be hosed out, a removable roof and doors, and a windshield that can be folded down. At its most basic, the seats are cloth and manually adjustable. Moving up through the trim levels increases convenience, comfort, and aesthetics. Jeep blends Wrangler traditions with current technology, creating a passenger environment both practical and easy to live with. As a result, whether you use your Wrangler to explore difficult-to-reach destinations or to commute to work, it achieves that goal in relative comfort with modern conveniences.

Cargo Room and Flexibility

Not only does the 4-door Wrangler offer more rear-seat legroom than the 2-door, but it posts larger cargo volumes, as well. With the second-row seat in place, the 4-door has 31.7 cubic-feet of cargo room. This expands to 72.4 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. The 2-door’s numbers drop to 12.9 and 31.7, respectively.
