The 2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2025 Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV are plug-in hybrid SUVs yearning for off-road adventures. They possess incredible tenacity when it comes time to claw over rugged terrain.
Of the two, the Wrangler seems the more obvious pick for mud-slinging drives. With its instantly recognizable shape, not to mention solid front and rear axles, the Wrangler goes into beast mode when the way ahead is strewn with mud, rocks, sand, or water.
The Range Rover Sport enjoys the more posh image and appears more at home being valet-parked outside a 5-star restaurant. However, don’t let its debonair image fool you; Land Rover builds luxury vehicles that firmly hold on to the British brand’s roots in all-terrain driving.
Let’s take a look at the key highlights of these plug-in hybrid SUVs.
2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe
2024 model shown
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas-electric 4-cylinder that delivers 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. This Jeep has strong acceleration and great passing power. It is also the best-selling version of the Wrangler, by the way. During a recent test drive in Utah, we judged it to be more fun to drive than non-hybrid Jeep models — well, the exception being the wild 470-hp Rubicon 392 model.
For the 2025 model year, a new ’41 Willys model that mimics the iconic WWII Jeep joins the lineup. It features unique painted wheels and military olive drab paint. Wrangler 4xe models range from the entry-level Sport S to the top-of-the-line Rubicon X, and all come with Jeep’s excellent 12.3-inch Uconnect5 infotainment system. Wrangler 4xe pricing begins at $52,590.
Jeep Wrangler 4xe Highlights
Convertible body: The Jeep Wrangler 4xe offers multiple roof styles, all of which can be removed and stored. The doors can also taken off for maximum air flow. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can tie down the windshield, although we wouldn’t recommend driving on the highway with it down.
Rubicon X: The Rubicon X comes packed with go-anywhere gear like a forward-facing off-road camera, full-time transfer case, rock rails, front and rear steel bumpers, and chunky 33-inch tires.
User-friendly infotainment: Every Wrangler comes standard with a sizable 12.3-inch screen, voice recognition, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and two USB ports. The backlit display is even easy to see on a sunny day with the top off.
Waterproof seating: Want to test the 34 inches of water-fording capability? Jeep offers 12-way power-adjustable front seats that are waterproof and can be operated while submerged. Just remember to pack dry socks and underwear.

2025 Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV
2024 model shown
Since this generation of Range Rover Sport received a complete redesign for the 2023 model year, it still looks and feels modern. In fact, it looks downright striking, and we think it’s one of the sportiest midsize luxury SUVs available. Driving the Range Rover Sport PHEV shows how much speed and agility can be baked into a sizable SUV. Available 4-wheel steering makes it great for squeezing through traffic or into parking spots.
For 2025, a new, lower-priced Dynamic SE PHEV (P460e) joins the brand’s top-line Autobiography PHEV (P550e). The Range Rover Sport Dynamic SE PHEV has 89 fewer hp and is about a half-second slower to reach 60 mph than the Autobiography PHEV, but it knocks more than $20,000 off the asking price. Range Rover Sport PHEV pricing begins at $96,725.
Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV Highlights
Road presence: We just touched on this subject, but it bears repeating: the Range Rover Sport is an attention-grabbing piece of machinery. Diehard fans of the old-school blocky Defender might be less enamored, but we think details like the flush glass and hidden door handles give it a sleek and speedy appearance. If the Wrangler is a T-shirt and jeans, the Range Rover Sport is a designer suit with handmade Italian loafers.
Electric-only range: The plug-in hybrid models — dubbed the P460e and P550e — provide up to 53 miles of electric-only driving range. That’s more than double the Jeep Wrangler 4xe’s 22 miles. In the P550e, this drivetrain produces a total of 543 hp or more than enough to launch this Range Rover from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.
All-terrain capability: Features like Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control and Terrain Response System drive home the point this fancy SUV isn’t afraid to get dirty. The former takes over braking and throttle inputs, allowing the driver to stay focused solely on steering. It’s also aided by a 3D-surround view camera. The latter system lets the driver select vehicle settings such as sand, snow, rocks, and mud.
Meridian sound: This booming audio system boasts 29 speakers and 1,430 watts of power. You’ll love it, but your neighbors might not.

Similarities
Despite vastly different images — and price points — the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Range Rover Sport PHEV stand out among many rivals for their off-road ruggedness. Many modern SUVs are designed to spend their lives on paved roads. That’s fine, though it’s entertaining when a vehicle can handle a daily commute, scale sand dunes, and power through muddy bogs.

Conclusion
Could we keep the cash equivalent of the Land Rover and grab the keys to the Jeep? Don’t get us wrong — the Range Rover Sport PHEV is a significantly more luxurious vehicle that looks like a million bucks. The problem is that you need a millionaire’s checking account to buy one.
Let’s keep our “sensible hat” firmly on our heads and recognize that the Wrangler 4xe is more user-friendly and even more off-road capable than ever before. Compared to the entry-level Range Rover Sport PHEV, you could buy any Wrangler 4xe model and still have enough money left for a summer of glamping throughout the U.S.
