The midsize 3-row SUV class features some of the stiffest competition in the automotive marketplace. The Hyundai Palisade coasts into the 2024 model year with few updates following a 2023 refresh. The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse received a complete makeover for the new model year. Should the folks at Hyundai be concerned with this renewed rival?
Let’s take a closer look at these 3-row family SUVs.
2024 Hyundai Palisade
The Hyundai Palisade offers an impressive combination of looks, performance, comfort, and technology — critical to success in the 3-row SUV segment. Powered by a 291-horsepower 6-cylinder engine, the Palisade is part SUV, part minivan, given that it can seat as many as eight people.
While there were no exterior changes for 2024, it did get a new trim level, the Calligraphy Night edition. It features a blacked-out exterior, including wheels, with all-wheel drive (AWD) added as standard.
It also gets some new technology: Highway Driving Assist. This semi-autonomous driving system combines various systems, including adaptive cruise control and lane centering, to make highway driving safer and easier. The available Highway Driving Assist II system can automatically change your speed based on GPS and highway data. Pricing starts at $38,045, including destination charges.
Hyundai Palisade Highlights
Safety-minded: Hyundai’s SmartSense suite of safety technology is standard across the Hyundai Palisade trim levels. It includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, navigation-based adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and more.
Easy access to tech: Few things are more frustrating than navigating a series of menus on a small touchscreen. Fortunately, that’s not a problem with the 12.3-inch screen in the Hyundai Palisade.
Outstanding warranty: Hyundai’s 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty offer you peace of mind — for a decade. Hyundai also throws in a 3-year/36,000-mile complimentary maintenance plan. Hyundai’s warranty outshines Chevy’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse
The Chevrolet Traverse received a complete redesign for 2024. Fortunately for loyal fans, it retained its spacious cabin with seating for up to eight people, courtesy of a third-row bench. It is among the roomiest vehicles in its class.
With a new square-shouldered, almost brutish exterior, it seems only reasonable it should get a new powerplant under the hood. The engine bay now features a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 328 hp, which is more ponies than its predecessor. The Traverse comes in four trim levels — LS, LT, Z71, and RS — with pricing on the LS starting at $39,495, including destination charges.
Chevrolet Traverse Highlights
Big screen: If you harbor concerns about being able to see a touchscreen clearly, worry no more, as the new Traverse comes with a 17.7-inch infotainment screen. That’s bigger than the 12.3-inch screen in the Hyundai Palisade.
Super Cruise: Described by many as the best hands-free driving technology on the road today, it’s available on the new Traverse. It combines adaptive cruise control and steering assistance, allowing drivers to keep their hands off the wheel and their feet off the pedals on more than 400,000 miles of mapped roads in the U.S. and Canada. The driver must remain alert and keep their eyes on the road.
Off-roader: For the first time in the Traverse lineup, a Z71 version is available. With AWD standard, the Z71 also fits a dedicated suspension, all-terrain tires, tow hooks, and a skid plate. Ground clearance is higher than on the regular Traverse, and the AWD system has switchable terrain modes. It’s a more capable off-roader than anything in the Hyundai Palisade lineup.

Similarities
The Hyundai Palisade and Chevy Traverse have enjoyed recent exterior styling updates, feature new driver assistance safety technologies, and spacious cabins.
Conclusion
The Chevrolet Traverse is bigger, faster, stronger, more fuel-efficient, and offers more cargo space. The Chevy is available with the hands-free Super Cruise system, while the Hyundai Palisade has no such hands-free system. Plus, the base prices are almost identical. The Palisade is excellent, but the Traverse may be even better for many families.
