Automakers are working hard to ensure buyers have plenty of options when it comes to SUVs. As they work to meet the needs of consumers, some of the classes, such as midsize and compact, get a little blurry.
That’s what we get with the 2025 Honda Passport and Buick Envision. Officially a midsize, the Passport offers plenty of space for five people and their cargo. The Envision, which is classified as a compact, is just a couple of inches shorter than the Passport but offers a little more premium experience.
Let’s explore the highlights of the 2024 Honda Passport and Buick Envision.
2025 Honda Passport

The Honda Passport proves it’s still possible to get more than you pay for in a vehicle. This 2-row, 5-passenger SUV comes in just three trim levels — EX-L, TrailSport, and Black Edition — because the content level is so high on the entry-level EX-L. Out of the gate, the Passport comes equipped with all-wheel drive and leather seating — typically upgrades for vehicles in this class.
Powered by a 280-hp, 3.6-liter 6-cylinder mated to a 9-speed automatic means plenty of power — it’ll tow 5,000 pounds — but you’ll pay the price if you have a heavy right foot. The Passport’s combined fuel economy rating is 21 mpg, which is better than others in the segment. However, if you’re tooling around off-road in the TrailSport package, there will be times when the extra oomph comes in handy.
The cabin offers plenty of space for five people, plus the cargo area behind the second row. It also provides plenty of legroom for those in the second row. Pricing begins at $43,795, including destination fees.
Honda Passport Highlights
Locking technology: Courtesy of Smart Entry with Walk-Away Auto Lock technology, Passport owners don’t have to worry about security. The system locks the vehicle automatically as you walk away with the key fob.
Honda Sensing: This suite of safety and assistance technology improves safety and performance using a Road Departure Mitigation System, Lane Keeping Assist System, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Collision Mitigation Braking System.
Highly contented: Every Passport comes with leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, wireless charging, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and AWD.

2025 Buick Envision
2024 model shown
Sitting right on the luxury segment line, the Buick Envision received an exterior facelift for 2024, with the front end seeing most of the updates. If you’re looking for a premium performance utility vehicle, know that isn’t the Envision’s forte. It’s built to be a comfortable ride with great technology, which aligns it with the rest of the Buick lineup.
Powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, the Envision’s engine puts out 228 hp, and AWD is standard. It comes with plenty of niceties, such as wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a hands-free tailgate. A slew of advanced driver safety technology is available in the mid and upper trim levels. Available in three trim levels — Preferred, Sport Touring, and Avenir — pricing starts at $37,895, including the destination fee.
Buick Envision Highlights
Tech help: The Technology 1 package offers many conveniences, such as front parking sensors, navigation, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera system, and a 9-speaker Bose audio upgrade.
Parking dream: Like much of the Buick lineup, technology is a massive part of the driving experience, or should we say the parking experience. The Envision offers enhanced parking assist as standard equipment on all trim levels. This feature assesses possible parking spaces, whether parallel or perpendicular, and then guides the vehicle into the space.
Some luxury: Available as an option in the Avenir trim, massaging front seats knead their occupants into full-on luxury vehicle territory. These seats, covered in perforated leather, also have heating and ventilation.

Similarities
The Honda Passport and Buick Envision might compete in different segments, but some significant similarities can be found here. They are comfortable and relaxing to drive, have plenty of headroom and legroom, and are equipped with impressive safety features. They also both get pretty fancy in their top trim levels.
Conclusion
The Honda Passport scores the quick and easy win here if things like resale value and a vast cargo hold take precedence. Let’s not forget the Passport is also pretty potent thanks to its 280-hp V6 engine. It’s in its sixth model year and showing its age here and there — such as a lack of wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Back in the positive column, the go-anywhere TrailSport model could entice adventure-seeking car shoppers into a Honda showroom.
Buick’s reboot of the Envision gives a much more premium look and feel. It’s not as ultimately vast as the Passport inside, but it’s also smaller and more affordable. The 228-hp turbo engine provides reasonable pep and good fuel economy with an EPA-rated 25 mpg combined. A little more verve wouldn’t hurt, and while the Avenir is undoubtedly fancy, its price could limit its appeal.
