The 2024 Genesis GV80 and Volvo XC90 are direct competitors in the midsize luxury SUV segment. Not only do they square off against each other, but they face a wide range of competitors, such as the Cadillac XT6, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Acura MDX, and many others.
The GV80 routinely stood out during our road tests for its strong acceleration, smooth ride, and upscale interior. On sale since the 2021 model year, it still has a head-turning shape thanks to its shieldlike front grille and slim LED exterior lighting.
With the Volvo XC90, SUV shoppers get the brand’s impeccable safety record, a bright and airy cabin, and a shape that, while more conservative than the GV80, is still stylish.
Does one emerge as the clear winner when put in a direct comparison? Let’s explore some highlights of the Genesis GV80 and Volvo XC90 to find out.
2024 Genesis GV80
The 2024 Genesis GV80 starts at $59,050, including a $1,350 destination fee. This model year’s updates include a new range-topping variant called the Prestige Signature, and all trims now have a Wi-Fi hot spot as standard.
The GV80 has only been on sale since the 2021 model year, so it’s still a relative newcomer. That hasn’t stopped it from scooping up a number of accolades, however, such as being our Best Buy Award winner in its segment.
Genesis GV80 Highlights
Strong turbo engines: We will never accuse the Genesis GV80 of being a slouch when quick acceleration is needed. The base drivetrain consists of a 300-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that can get the GV80 from a standstill to 60 mph in about six seconds. An available 375-hp twin-turbo V6 cuts about a second off this time. Both are paired to an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
Class-leading warranty: Car shoppers who like knowing they are covered by a great warranty will love this highlight of the Genesis GV80. First, there is a 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, along with 10 years/100,000-mile powertrain coverage. Better still, Genesis includes three years/36,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance and five years of roadside assistance.
Highway Driving Assist II: While not a hands-free system, this semi-autonomous driving aid is still an excellent ally for anyone who frequently drives long distances. A recent update now allows Highway Driving Assist II to complete a lane change if the driver uses the turn signal and the vehicle’s sensors agree it’s safe to do so.

2024 Volvo XC90
The Volvo XC90 can be had with one of three available engines, including a plug-in hybrid that produces 455 hp and has an electric driving range of 32 miles. Like the GV80, all-wheel drive is standard, and the XC90 scores strong marks in safety tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
This generation of XC90 dates back to the 2016 model year. That makes it one of the older entries in its segment, though Volvo has made gradual improvements since it was introduced. Pricing starts at $57,895, including delivery fees.
Volvo XC90 Highlights
Powertrain choices: The three available powertrains in the XC90 include a 247-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 295-hp version of this same 4-cylinder, and a potent 455-hp plug-in hybrid model. Each comes with all-wheel drive and operates in conjunction with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Our choice of the trio would probably be the 295-hp turbo-4 due to its balance of power, efficiency, and price.
Google-based infotainment system: A 9-inch infotainment touchscreen runs on Google-based software. This tech means you can access handy features like Google Maps and Google Assistant, the latter of which has user-friendly voice commands. Wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto, along with wireless device charging, are all standard.
Pilot Assist: Pilot Assist uses the adaptive cruise control system and lane-keeping assist to provide a degree of driving autonomy on highways. Like Highway Driving Assist II in the Genesis GV80, it does require the driver to keep their hands on the wheel.

Similarities
The Genesis GV80 and Volvo XC90 are two smooth operators among midsize luxury SUVs with 3-row seating. However, those extra perches are optional in the GV80 and standard in the XC90. Furthermore, third-row availability in the GV80 is limited to the 3.5T model with the Advanced package. They have similar starting prices, standard all-wheel drive, and great safety track records.
Conclusion
Despite starting to look and feel its age, we think the Volvo XC90 remains a strong contender in a highly competitive market. A steady stream of updates has added more tech and drivetrains. It also has one of the more attractive interiors, with a roomier third row and cargo hold than the Genesis GV80.
Yet, time marches on, and the Genesis GV80 has sharper driving dynamics, a similarly posh cabin, and comes with that outstanding warranty. If you don’t need a roomy third row, the Genesis is the winner.
