The 2025 Genesis G90 and 2025 Volvo S90 are the highest rungs on each company’s luxury sedan ladder. The Genesis G90 comes packed with a ton of tech and comfort features. The Volvo S90 is not quite so resplendent as the G90, yet the quality of its ride and seating are major attractions. We also think most people will like the cool understated design and the top-notch interior materials. Like the G90, it comes standard with all-wheel drive (AWD) and an impressive list of features.
Let’s explore some highlights of the Genesis G90 and Volvo S90 to see how they compare.
2025 Genesis G90
The base version of the 2025 Genesis G90 (although “base” doesn’t even come close to describing the car) comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 sending 375 horsepower to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. That’s a decent amount of muscle for propelling a large luxury sedan full of fine materials and tech, all assembled to a high level. Despite its size, we’ve found the G90 easy to maneuver as well as comfortingly composed in virtually every driving situation.
Genesis G90 Highlights
E-Supercharger model: This higher variant adds an electrically powered supercharger to the G90’s regular twin-turbo V6, boosting output by 34 hp to 409 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. Accelerating from a standstill to 60 mph takes only 5.1 seconds.
Class-leading warranty: The G90 scores big with its warranties. Genesis provides five years or 60,000 miles (whichever happens first) of bumper-to-bumper coverage, plus a warranty of 10 years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain. Complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles is also included.
Virtual Venues Live: This 23-speaker surround-sound system from Bang & Olufsen can replicate the acoustics of venues such as the Boston Symphony Hall. The listening experience in the Genesis G90 is exemplary.
Highway Driving Assist 2: By combining driver aids like adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera system and lane-keeping assistance, HDA 2 is effective at reducing fatigue during long highway stints. We’ve found that this is yet another area where Genesis does extremely well.

2025 Volvo S90
2024 model shown
What we enjoy most about the 2025 Volvo S90 is its supple suspension, great outward vision, and deeply comfortable seating. We’ll be the first to admit that there are sportier alternatives with quicker acceleration and sharper steering, but for a high-quality/low-stress drive, the S90 is a perfect pick.
The base drivetrain packs a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 295 hp. An 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. A plug-in hybrid version is also available. This year, the erstwhile Ultimate trim becomes Ultra. And the Recharge part is dropped from the T8 plug-in hybrid’s official title.
Volvo S90 Highlights
Plug-in hybrid: The T8 powertrain offered in the S90 employs the same turbocharged/supercharged engine from the regular S90, while adding a pair of electric motors and raising output to a substantial 455 hp. Its zero-to-60 mph acceleration time drops below five seconds. Even better, there’s 38 miles of electric driving range before the gasoline engine kicks in. The Genesis G90 has no such hybrid option.
Seating comfort: Even if the S90 lacks some of the more obvious opulence of the Genesis G90 — such as massaging and reclining rear seats — the Volvo’s seats rank among the absolute best. We think it’s unlikely that you’ll find more comfortable or supportive seating anywhere, at almost any price.
Legroom, cargo space: Although classified as a midsize sedan, the Volvo S90 has a longer than usual wheelbase, resulting in plenty of rear legroom — more than the next-size-up G90. The S90’s trunk is also bigger. Such spaciousness bolsters the Volvo’s case as the practical choice.
Pilot Assist: This is Volvo’s take on partially autonomous highway driving. During many road tests, we’ve enjoyed how this system eases the grind of extended road trips. Pilot Assist is standard equipment, along with several other safety features.

Similarities
The Genesis G90 and Volvo S90 are equally adept at melting the miles away and insulating their occupants from the outside world. Having all-wheel drive means the ability to cope with rainy, snowy, or ice-covered roads. We also appreciate the fact that each one comes loaded with safety features.

Conclusion
As top sedans for each marque, the Genesis G90 and Volvo S90 have plenty to offer. Despite being labeled a midsize model, the S90 has the advantage in second-row legroom and trunk volume. However, it can’t quite match the overall grandness of the G90. That said, the S90’s base price is about $30,000 less. That’s a massive chunk of change, even if we think the Genesis G90 is ultimately better at being a flagship luxury sedan — which it should be at that level of pricing.
