2019 Toyota Tundra CrewMax
Starting Price: $36,945 | Price Yours
Above Average: Strong reputation for good resale and reliability, choice of two V8 engines, standard TSS-P collision warning and driver assist system
Below Average: Towing, payload and fuel economy lag behind the competition, lacking V6 or diesel engine options, short bed only, missing some high-tech options and infotainment must haves like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Consensus: A sturdy full-size pickup with a stellar reputation, but limited abilities that fall short of the segment leaders.
The Chevy Silverado is the second best-selling pickup in America. All new this year, the Silverado brings a new line of engines, transmissions and trims, as well as expanded capabilities. Of note are unique features like a choice of configurable or power-operated tailgate, and a rearview camera mirror. Chevrolet has also expanded the Silverado’s bed width giving it best-in-class volume figures. Later in the model year, Chevy plans to offer a 3.0-liter turbodiesel.
The Tundra still holds it value better than any of the domestic trucks, but it really can’t compete in the areas of towing, payload, fuel economy or engine options. There’s only one bed length for the Crew Cab, 5.5-feet. The Tundra does come standard with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS-P) that includes pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, auto high beams and lane departure warning. The Tundra also made KBB’s top 10 Best Resale Value for 2018 list.
Chevrolet Silverado Advantages
The Silverado offers better max towing and payload numbers, more interior room front and rear and a larger and more versatile bed. The Silverado offers more engine choices and better fuel economy, and its infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Toyota Tundra Advantages
The Tundra comes standard with a V8 engine as well as advanced driver assists that are optional on the Silverado. The Tundra has a smaller turning circle and its resale values continue to shine, as does its reliability and durability ratings.
Similarities
Both trucks offer an expansive model range running from basic to plush. Both have powerful V8 engine options, advanced driver assists and tech features, off-road packages and upgrades for heavy duty towing. Both have similar warranties.
Final Recommendation
If you’re looking for best in class towing, payload, horsepower and bed volume, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado is your truck. However, if you just need modest power for every day chores, the Tundra is a proven entity with a long track record of reliability, longevity and strong resale.
