2007 Chevrolet Silverado (Classic) 3500 Review

KBB Editors

By KBB Editors

Updated December 23, 2019

Our editors drive and evaluate hundreds of new cars every single year, turning thousands of miles and countless hours behind the wheel into helpful reviews, ratings, and comparisons. They also have lives outside of work, or so they think. You’d be surprised what you can learn by hauling a dirt bike, hunting for a wayward sippy cup, or just packing the trunk full of groceries.

Pros

If you need a serious work truck that can haul loads of dirt or tow a horse trailer, there is a Silverado Classic with your name on it. The Silverado Classic’s interior can be quite plush, but the price starts to climb when it’s so equipped.

Cons

If you are not used to piloting a large pickup, the Silverado Classic may be a bit too much truck for you. The Silverado Classic also lacks some of the newer conveniences, such as GPS navigation and side-curtain airbags.

What's New?

No major changes for 2007.

It’s hard to let a good thing go, especially when it’s making money hand over fist. Perhaps that’s why Chevrolet is reticent to let go of the long-running Silverado platform. Despite the arrival of the all-new 2007 Silverado, the old model will continue in all its glory, re-badged as the Silverado Classic. Like its twin, the GMC Sierra Classic, the Silverado Classic will continue as a full-line pickup with 1500, 2500 and 3500 models available in Regular Cab, Extended Cab and Crew Cab configurations. Also remaining in the lineup are the Hybrid Silverados, featuring an electric starter motor between the engine and transmission to help save fuel by allowing the engine to shut down when stopped, and the high-performance SS models.

Driving the Chevrolet Silverado (Classic) 3500

When Chevy people say their trucks are "like a rock," they’re not kidding. The Silverado Classic is as rigid and inflexible as an iron rod. Even over unpaved roads, the truck’s suspension remains composed enough to keep most vibrations out of the cabin.
When not burdened with a heavy load, the Silverado Classic’s performance is practically muscle-car quick, especially when accelerating from a standing stop.

The four-speed-automatic transmission delivers crisp, precise shifts and features a Tow/Haul mode that limits gear hunting when towing or navigating steep elevations.
The Silverado Classic’s improved power steering results in less play and a heavier feel that delivers more feedback to the driver. The brakes, too, have been improved with a much firmer pedal feel that requires far less travel to engage the beefy disc brakes.

Interior Comfort

The Silverado Classic’s interior is nice, but starting to show its age. A large amount of black plastic on the dash face and the lower-quality plastics used on the dash and door make the interior look a bit generic. On the other hand, the Silverado Classic’s seats are wonderfully comfortable, especially when covered in leather. Those who regularly carry two or more people will want to choose the Crew Cab for its roomy rear seat; the Extended Cab is best used for shorter trips or, better yet, as a secured storage area.

Exterior Styling

Chevy trucks are always easily recognizable, no matter how old. The Silverado Classic maintains this tradition with a boxy middle section tempered by rounded edges and the familiar Chevrolet split grille. Even though its design is older than the F150 and Dodge Ram, the Silverado Classic strikes a powerful stance, especially when outfitted with the Z71 package.

Favorite Features

OnStar
Though it might not seem like a big deal, the OnStar system can be a life saver, literally. Should the airbag deploy, OnStar is immediately notified and contacts you to determine if assistance is needed.

SS Model
The 367-horsepower, high-performance SS model combines the utility of a pickup with the heart of a NASCAR racer.

Standard Features

Base Work Truck models come with a V6 engine, tilt steering wheel and steel wheels. The 1LT adds cruise control, CD player and air conditioning, and 2LT and LTZ models get more standard features plus a V8 engine. Various models can be equipped with even larger engines, including a 5.3-liter or 6.0-liter V8.

Factory Options

Options for the Silverado Classic are too numerous to list. Beyond the various bed lengths, wheelbases and cab configurations, you can opt for the StabiliTrak stability management program, a number of off-road and towing packages and the OnStar telematics system. The SS package adds a 6.0-liter high-output Vortec V8 with 20-inch chrome wheels, high-performance suspension, 3.73 rear axle and automatic locking differential.

Engine & Transmission

The Silverado Classic’s line up offers a wide variety of engines, allowing the consumer to choose between economy and power or a combination of both.
