Used 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Limited Regular Cab

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Limited is a carryover of the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 full-size pickup. GM has rolled out an updated version of the Silverado for 2022. Still, anticipating potential supply chain issues that could hinder the rollout of the refreshed Silverado, the company has kept the outgoing model around for an additional year. Think of it as a stopgap that’ll be available until the updated 2022 Silverado is out on dealer lots in full force.

Whether or not it’s long for this world, though, the Silverado Limited offers all the same attributes as the 2021 Silverado 1500. Its main competitor is the Ford F-150, along with the Ram 1500 and GMC Sierra, to which it’s practically identical, save for some aesthetic differences. A half-ton pickup, the Silverado is offered in a number of different configurations. Regular, extended, and 4-door crew cabs are offered in short-, medium-, and long-bed lengths.

Plenty of choices are offered under the hood as well. Entry-level models come with a 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, while two different V8s are offered as well. Transmissions consist of 6-, 8-, and 10-speed automatics; what you get depends on which engine you choose. Also available is a turbodiesel inline-6 that comes mated to a 10-speed automatic.

With the Ford F-150 fully redesigned for 2021, and the Ram 1500 continuing to impress with its upscale interior, we’d lean toward holding out for the updated 2002 Silverado to land at dealerships. But if you need a truck before that happens, the 2022 Silverado 1500 Limited offers the same attributes as the 2021 Silverado.

Equipped the right way, the 2022 Silverado 1500 Limited can tow over 13,000 pounds and can be optioned with a clever multi-camera trailering system that offers views from all angles.

Having driven this generation of Chevrolet Silverado in a variety of configurations with different powertrains, we find it to be a supremely competent truck. It doesn’t drive like an especially big vehicle and offers better ride quality than you’d expect from a full-size body-on-frame truck. There’s a little body roll in the corners, but for the most part, things are pretty composed.

The drawbacks are mostly related to the cabin — it’s dated and uninspired, and lacks the tech and refinement offered by Ford and Ram.

If you aren’t sure which engine to get, the 5.3-liter V8 is a safe bet. The fact that it’s a V8, but not the most expensive V8 (that title goes to the 6.2) means it has broad appeal. The 6.2 makes 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, good for a 0-60 time of about 5.5 seconds. That’s quick for a full-size truck.

The 2.7-liter 4-cylinder available in the Silverado makes 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque. That’s a lot of power from a relatively small engine, meaning those turbochargers have to do a fair amount of work. Beyond the unorthodox noises coming from under the hood, though, you’d hardly know that the Silverado is packing a 4-cylinder. Factor in the lower price tag and up to 23 mpg combined, and the 4-cylinder Silverado certainly has its place.

As for the diesel, it offers up to 9,300 pounds of towing capacity and is rated for up to 33 mpg combined. Low-end torque is ample.

The interior in the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited is a mixed bag. At lower price points, it’s fine. In base models, you’ll find vinyl seats, a plastic steering wheel, roll-up windows, and manual door locks. Most trucks, though, are built to a higher specification, and many include a leather steering wheel and heated seats, not to mention power controls throughout. Once you get into higher price points, though, the value proposition starts to fall apart; the Silverado and its GMC Sierra sibling are simply a generation (or two) behind the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500.

Basic work truck builds are likely to come with a front bench seat, while a crew cab offers room for up to 5 passengers to ride along comfortably. The same goes for seats and steering wheel adjustability; entry-level models get manual controls, while power operation takes over on upper trims. Unfortunately, the telescoping functionality of the steering wheel is limited to higher trims. Every 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Limited will have either a 7- or 8-in display.

Overall, the 2021 Silverado Limited’s interior leaves much to be desired. In fact, an updated interior is arguably the biggest change made to the updated 2022 Silverado (that’s the Silverado that’ll eventually supersede the 2022 Silverado Limited on dealer lots). If you’re looking for modern design and technology, you’ll likely want to hold off on buying a Silverado until you can get your hands on an updated model. In the meantime, the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 that are on sale right now both offer better cabins than the Silverado Limited.

Like all the trucks offered by the Big 3 American manufacturers, you can get your Silverado in a number of configurations. There are regular-, extended-, and crew-cab configurations, along with short-, standard-, and long-bed lengths.

Personalization comes into play with different packages. “Custom” trims often introduce a smattering of nice-to-have styling elements, while RST models are all about curb appeal as well. Trail Boss models introduce some added off-road capability in the form of a lift, all-terrain tires, and some other bits. Special Editions include the Midnight Edition, which features black trim all over, the Texas Edition, which is a nod to the Lonestar State, and the Real Tree Special Edition, which includes a camo motif. High Country models take a luxury approach, introducing chrome and unique wheels.

A feature we enjoy is the available Multi-Flex tailgate. This was originally introduced with the GMC Sierra, where it’s marketed as the Multi-Pro tailgate. Either way, this multi-function rear gate can be configured as a step, a load stop, a work surface, and more.

TOWING TECH
The Silverado can be optioned with an impressive camera system for towing. When equipped, as many as 15 different camera views give drivers a look down either side of the vehicle, at the connection, off the back of the cab, off the back of the trailer, and more. A camera can even be mounted inside the trailer so that you can keep an eye on your load. An “invisible trailer” mode connects the side views to a feed off the rear of the trailer, effectively making the trailer itself seem “invisible.”

MULTI-FLEX TAILGATE
The Multi-Pro tailgate, first introduced on the GMC Sierra for 2019, made its way to the Silverado for 2021 as the “Multi-Flex” tailgate. Whatever it’s called, this clever tailgate has a number of hinged areas that allow for six different positions, including a step, a load stopper, and a work surface.

In its simplest trim, the basic 2022 Chevrolet Silverado LTD is a Work Truck with the 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The old 4.3-liter V6 has been dropped. Steel wheels, disc brakes, manual door locks, roll-up windows, and either a vinyl or cloth front bench seat are included. Perhaps surprisingly, a 7-in touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is included as standard.

At the rear, the bed itself comes with 12 tie-down points, while corner steps integrated into the rear bumper make accessing the bed easier.

The majority of Silverado 1500 Limited models that leave dealer lots will be higher trim levels. One step up from the base Work Truck, the Silverado 1500 Limited Custom gains cruise control, power windows and locks, and 20-in wheels. The Custom Convenience and Infotainment packages add things like an EZ Lift power lock and release tailgate, LED bed lighting, remote start, and more.

The Silverado Limited LT model gains chrome bumpers and mirror caps. Compatibility with GM’s OnStar service, semi-automatic single-zone climate control, and the availability of additional options and powertrains round out the LT.

The Silverado 1500 Limited RST gains on-road appeal with black accents and LED fog lights, along with keyless entry, keyless start, and a rear-window defogger.

The LTZ model is where the Silverado Limited gains comfort features like a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat, leather upholstery, an 8-in touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, heated seats and a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a high-resolution rearview camera, a tilting and telescoping steering wheel, a trailer brake controller, an automatic locking rear differential, 120-volt power outlets, heated side-view mirrors, and an integrated trailer brake controller.

The most premium Silverado Limited is the High Country. It comes with 20-in wheels, heated and ventilated front seats, HID headlights, chrome side steps, an 8-in touchscreen with navigation, a Bose-branded premium audio system, a spray-in bed liner, and a power tailgate.

Four-wheel drive (4WD) is optional across the board on the Silverado Limited. It’s standard on the Trail Boss.

Optional engines include the 6.2-liter V8 and turbodiesel inline 6-cylinder. Optional on lower trims are things like a power driver’s seat and keyless entry with push-button start. These things come standard on upper trims. There’s a Z51 package that adds a “G80” automatic locking rear differential and hill-descent control.

Blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors come standard on the LTZ and High Country trims, but are optional on LT and RST models. A Safety Confidence package that includes forward-collision alert with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking is available for Work Truck and Custom trims.

A Safety Package II adds lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams to LTZ and High Country trims. General Motors’ excellent Adaptive Ride Control suspension system is available on the High Country.

Other available options include that clever advanced trailer camera system, a rearview mirror camera, navigation, a Bose-branded premium audio system, and a wireless phone charging pad.

Available special-edition trucks include the Realtree Edition, All-Star Edition, and Texas Edition.

As there were in years past, there are a variety of engines offered in the Chevrolet Silverado Limited.

The bread-and-butter engine is the 5.3-liter V8, which makes plenty of power and enables the Silverado to do just about anything a truck buyer could want. It’s capable of towing up to 11,500 pounds. The 6.2-liter V8 offers more performance and is generally found under the hood of more premium Silverado trims. It can tow up to 13,300 pounds.

Believe it or not, the 2.7-liter 4-cylinder is a worthy entry-level option. Output is an impressive 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque – that’s a lot for a 4-cylinder. The Silverado’s base engine comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. While you won’t mistake it for a V8, the turbo-4 is still capable of towing up to 9,600 pounds. Fuel economy isn’t bad either — 20 combined with 2WD and 18 combined for 4WD models.

If you’re looking for a little more muscle, the 6.2-liter V8 is as good as it gets. It puts out 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque and comes mated exclusively to the 10-speed automatic.

Then, there’s the diesel. A 3.0-liter inline-6, the Silverado Duramax puts out 277 horsepower and a whopping 460 lb-ft of torque, all while returning 33 mpg combined. Towing capacity for the diesel is up to 9,500 pounds.
