Positive Review
A car from a different time. A time when men got grease under their own nails, and changed their own oil. A time when you looked under the hood and you saw an engine, small as it is, not a plastic cover. This car is simple in it's design and loved by most of it's owners. Those who hate this car argue that it's slow and lacking. This car is not made to go fast, I need the whole on-ramp to get up to freeway speed. There is no passing in the Metro, there is only spending your time thinking of how the slow truck in front of you could be destroyed. If you can get past the tin can slam when you close the door, the ability to hear the road, the engine and the car next to you's engine. You will find a loving car, that will be there for you no matter how cold it is, heat might be a problem as most of these don't have A/C. All in all, best fluke purchase I've ever made. My friend was like "hey wanna buy this" and I was like "sure". I loved my car, not like ricers love their Honda's then race them hard. No I loved this car and knew what every sound meant. Sadly there will never be a car as great as this ever again. Chevys replacement, the Aveo, is a sad pile. I own one now and I paw for the days when I could get 42 mpg while driving around town, now I get 25. I cry ever time I fill up my Aveo. My friends used to say the Metro was a Hybrid, it ran on two things, Hopes and Dreams.
Critical Review
Being the third Metro I've owned, I've expected about the same from it as I've gotten from the past Metros. These are decently reliable vehicles. Minor faults there aren't many, but there are a few major faults with these vehicles. Firstly, the body at the control arms rust out and cause problems; control arms breaking free at large bumps. This is definitely something to watch for in the future for purchasing. Always check at these points before purchase. The G10 engine (1.0 liter 3-cylinder) tends to burn exhaust valves, and more often than not cylinder 3 exhaust valve. This is caused by oil changes that have gone on too long and bad exhaust system; leaks, no muffler, missing pieces. Minor problems include bad synchros from 2nd-3rd when downshifting as owners do not know how to rev-match when going to a lower gear. Rear wheel wells tend to rust out as well along with the spare tire bowl. Blower motor speed switch tends to break, however, this can be remedied with a zip tie around the switch or installing an aftermarket switch. Fuel gauge and speedometer gauge can read improperly. Dash lights may not work due to faulty instrument panel dimmer switch. This can be fixed by jumping a power wire to the ground wire. (You will lose your capability to adjust brightness, but will regain your instrument cluster lights.) I purchased a 1998 Chevrolet Metro with the 5 speed. When I looked at it I noticed a fair amount of rust at the control arms, and the engine had quite a knocking to it (connecting rod bearing 2). The oil pan leaked, but not too badly, and exhaust was very loud due to being rigged up. I drove the vehicle like that for 5 months. It's still going. I have, however, done all the maintenance myself, save for a pipe welded up from the catalytic converter back. I've done rear breaks (drums, shoes, hardware), wheel bearings, connecting rod bearings, oil pan, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor, coolant temperature sensor, cooling fan switch, all fluids changed besides brake fluid, thermostat, alternator belt, battery, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, and general lubrication. Most of the fixes have been preventative maintenance that was neglected by the previous owner. Vehicle has been exceptionally reliable, will always start, will always get me from point A to B even with 60 Psi of pressure in cylinder 3. If you can pick one up for $250, put $300 into it, you will have yourself a great running vehicle for years to come.

My Metro is the 2 door hatchback with1.0 3 Cylinder 5 Speed It is restored. Everything is brand new on the car. Very fun to drive and gets awesome gas mileage! I will own this car for a very long time. I live in Florida so I don't have to travel hills. Perfect car for a single person or family of 4.
Very fun to drive.
Three cylinder so top speed is 65.
Very reliable, low gas mileage, brand new tires. No dents in the body. No holes in the original upholstery. Five-speed manual shift. It gets up to 48 miles per gallon. Shiny black in color.
good price, fun to drive, roomy, low upkeep
cup holder too close to the gear shift & too small
I love this car! Only basic maintainance has been needed. I wish they still made it because I would buy another one just like it. People on the street ask me if I want to sell it, but I wont.

Cheap to drive, fun and all arround great little c

I bought this car new 16 years ago and it's still in excellent repair. I get an average 43MPG in local driving and have done 58MPG on trips to Montana from Oregon. I haven't even needed to replace anything except for tires at 50,000 miles, I have 66,000 miles on it and it's like new.
small 4 door, reliable gas saver, easy to park
cup holders/stereo/weather insulation/no a/c
This car has been in the family since it was purchased used in 2003@42k miles. Since then it's never left me or my mother stranded on the side of the road. it takes abuse with ease and is a fun peppy little car. It's extremely reliable (had no problems just brakes/oil/tires ect.). Good car if you're looking for a first car for someone/yourself. I still own it to this day and do not plan on letting it go anytime soon. Planning on doing a little TLC to keep her happy and that's about it! get's a good 30mpg all around (4 cyl auto)
We bought this car off the lot to use primarily as a run around town vehicle. After 15 years, I still get 40 miles to the gallon, mostly in town, some highway. It is surprisingly roomy inside. A little low, my husband was disabled and as he deteriorated it got harder for him to get in and out, but not impossible. The only warranty work we had done was a switch in the fan. With regular oil, filter, tire rotation, we never experienced any major problems, nothing you would not expect to have to deal with as a car gets older and needs a little more TLC. I know several other Metro owners and they have had the same experience. I think Chevy hit one out of the ball park with this car.
Gas milage, interior looks, front seat leg space
small back seat, no power steering, no cruise
I've owed this car for about two years, I bought it with 80,000 miles roughly. I used to only drive it on trips but now I drive it daily, so for miles are getting put on. So far I have had no problems at all besides the left front speaker rattles a bit. (no big deal) Pretty solid car for being in extreme salt during Iowa winters. Just have to take care of it. There is no power steering and no cruise which I would have loved to have on this car. The part I love the most is the MPG. It is the best I've ever had by far. I get about 35 MPG on regular gas with out ethanol. Engine is very peppy and I havent had any problems with it at all so far. I change oil every 3000 miles. (they are known to burn oil, but mine does not) All in all if you want a pretty basic small sedan that treats your wallet good, then this is a car for you. Also a good first car or early car.
