"Equinox- one year report"

I have been completely satisfied with my Equinox. I now have 15 months of driving, approx 23k miles. Runs great, zero problems. I love the interior styling of this vehicle. I have the LT1 level, I now wish I had upgraded to the LT2 or LTZ level (I am really a cheapskate when buying a car). I use in business (real estate), with lots of peeps in the car. Most of the time I use as mini office, lunch room, etc, so interior comfort is really important for me. Clean up of interior has been great, I forget name of cleaner I use, but I hit the interior with spray bottle and cloth every couple of months... looks like new again. I have a choice of vehicle to drive every day, I pick the Equinox over my 2005 Mercedes C230 every day. Let my kid drive the other one, I prefer the great gas milage, height on road to see over other cars, and the R O O M inside. Recommend you place the Equinox on your buy list.

Critical Review

"just ok, but tired of problems"

i bought this car brand new in feb. 2011. it started off nice, a little concerned about mpg. i usually always average 24mpg so not too bad. well now one year later i am so scared that vehicle is not going to last 5 years. it rattles bad all over, it has been in the shop 3 or 4 times, once because the engine light came on, the cause, engine misfiring! the transmission slips then slams into gear. i have told the dealer about this and their reply is "ya that six speed trans can make it feel a little funny". seriously! i'm 36 and have driven all types if vehicles, i'm pretty sure i can tell that this transmission is not right. steering wheel was sticking so they put in a new rack. i guess they thought it ok to give it back with the steering wheel cocked to the left. hmm! now steering is clicking. not too happy at this point. i love the looks and dont want to have to give it up but enough already. fix the problems GM. also on start up the engine sounds as though its going to fall out with all the clanking. but in 2 seconds sound is gone. idk.

This is my first car and I love it, it drives good
Pros

Good sound quality, comfort, and gas mileage

Cons

no music bluetooth, just for calls

It is very smooth down the road and gas mileage is amazing, one thing I don't like about it, is that it has wireless Bluetooth for phone calls and Siri, but not for music.

I ha b e had my car for several years, spent $2000 plus on it and it still a piece of junk. 5 mechanics and still shutting off at stop signs and engine losses power. Will never own another chevy

Great car
Pros

very little mechanical issues, drives very smoothly

Cons

no rear air, can be a bit loud

We've had our 2012 Equinox since 2013 and have had very little issues. We drove it from California to Florida when we moved and had no problems. Wish Equinox came in a hybrid!

Cheaply-made polished terd. Can't wait to sell it

The Equinox looks nice enough and rides smooth, but I think the engineers cut the wrong corners to keep the manufacturing cost down. It's very cheaply made overall. There are not one but two common problems that quickly lead to premature engine failure. I've talked to others with the same vehicle and some have already had the engine replaced. 1. The guides for the timing chain are plastic and tend to fall apart after a few years, which not only leaves chunks of plastic floating in the oil, but a loose timing chain quickly causes catastrophic mechanical failure. 2. No PCV valve. Why does that matter? Because instead of the PCV valve that's been standard for decades, there's only a tiny hole that easily gets plugged. Excess pressure builds up in the wrong parts of the engine, blows out seals, dumps all your oil on the road, and surprise! Your engine just seized. The only way to prevent this is a regular cleaning which requires taking off the intake manifold. Other than potentially catastrophic failures (which fortunately I was able to prevent), I also dealt with a seized brake caliper, a completely rusted out muffler, and peeling clearcoat. Previous owner dealt with rear window trim that fell off and the steering column sticking. Dealer recommendations vary a lot on changing the transmission fluid, but it obviously needed to be done WAY before 100k - the fluid was a thick black goo. Lucky the transmission still works. Also no transmission dipstick makes it a pain in the butt to check or to routinely drain and fill at home.

Oil Eater and Poor MPG
Pros

Handles well in weather, comfortable drive and easy to control, buttons on the console for climate and radio controls

Cons

Engine consumes oil at excessive rates

Rating this vehicle 2 stars because it's gotten me over 125k miles at this point, but I put a quart of oil in it every 2 weeks and when I asked the dealership about it after my second camshaft sensor went out (just after warranty expired) they said "these cars just eat oil". If you can keep the engine well lubricated it's fine, but expect to spend a lot of time and money checking it. Otherwise your engine will sputter when it's low. Also learned today that KBB rates this year/make/model as having MPG in the 22/32 city/hwy range and I've never in its life gotten that. City/hwy driving locally I get 21 at best, and strict hwy driving I got 24 mpg. Wouldn't recommend this car to most people.
