"Good basic 4 wheel drive truck - Horrible GPS sys"

Good basic 4 wheel drive truck, but not really small or mid size; darn close to our Sierra. Love the rear view camera. I only have 3,500 miles on it, but the gas mileage is only 18 around town and 24 highway. The 4 wheel drive has to be switched on manually and doesn't engage automatically when conditions require it. The lack of a CD player is compensated for by the 4 USB ports, although 2 are accessible from in the back seat. The seat heat seems to be a warmer at best, no real heat in the cold weather. Remote starting is a great feature, although we have only had the opportunity to warm the truck and not cool it. Adequately powered; I connected my trailer and moved about 3500 pounds of wet sod approximately 25 miles over Tennessee hills without any strain. My mileage only dropped to 18 MPG. The backup camera made it a breeze to connect to the trailer! The GPS system is a wast of money, its like a 1990s Garmin. The POI database is outdated and EXTREMELY small with a VERY POOR search engine. Features like current speed limits are not implemented. Many roads are not in map and I drive through the woods or fields frequently. Adjacent lakes and rivers aren't shown like on other systems. The voice recognition is comparable to a 1960 game computer, it's constantly saying the "Sorry I don't understand" message. An example is requesting a local "Nursery", the fool thing may return "Schools".

"Look before you buy"

2100 miles and 4 weeks after purchase the coolant reservoir supply line (reservoir to engine) came off, the engine overheated and the vehicle shut down. The tow truck driver found the coolant line, and it was a slip fit meaning the clamp (that was correctly installed) did not perform as required. Dealership changed the coolant hose and clamp, saying both were defective. Also has a drive-line vibration at 65 MPH that the dealership says is normal (due to being so quiet and noise insulation only enhances the condition). Test drove two others and they do not have the same condition. Vehicle was dealer transferred from another dealership. Paperwork said 80 miles at purchase but it had 150+ on the ODO. The Onstar report (and the driver information display) both show oil life at 70% when I bought it new. Ironically, it still remains at 70% after driving it for four weeks. Tips: 1:Always check the basics for potential loose lines, leaks etc even if it is brand new. 2: Always ensure before you leave the dealer that your car has the same mileage on the ODO as indicated on the paperwork. This could be a simple oversight of test drive miles versus mileage at reception. 3: OnStar monitors and scores your driving habits whether you like it or not. If you do not prefer this type of intrusion/oversight, look elsewhere. 4: Look at the vehicle thoroughly in direct sunlight before you drive away. Mine had a repair to the right rear door (done by GM according to the dealer). It is currently in the body shop being refinished (the door only). 5: Take it home overnight, park it in the driveway and spend time looking it over good. Drive it on a smooth and quiet road and at interstate speeds for a sustained amount of time to ensure there are no potential issues that you will have to either deal with or accept in the future. Once you drive it off the lot, it is your problem and no one elses. On the engine overheating. The dealer contends that the vehicle operated as intended, shutting itself down when it overheated (agreed), but the coolant hose and clamp did not hence the tow in after four weeks and 2100 miles. If you arent prepared for what may happen in the event of a failure through no fault of your own, ask before you buy of what the dealer is responsible to do versus what the manufacture is. Get it in writing (good luck with that) Dealership says they only sell the truck but dont make it and GM says they only make the truck but dont sell it. IE: After the engine overheated, my concern is the overall longevity of the engine and potential premature failure because of it. GM will NOT buy back a vehicle on what if scenarios but only on what is considered a legitimate hard break. Overall this is a great truck and I believe the coolant line was something that should have been caught on a PDI inspection and isnt realty the fault of the truck itself (or perhaps it is considering the fact that the coolant hose was a slip fit on the bottle port). Maybe a 1 in a million chance that this happened. This is my third Colorado. My previous two previous gen Colorados were good trucks. Good things about this truck: 1: Visors that slide aft when deployed to the side window (blocking that gap that most visors never do) 2: The step in the bumper corners (really nice) 3: The overall design. Looks like a Malibu Pickup and the view out on the hood is nice 4: The option to manual shift (transmission hunts in town driving. To eliminate this: pull shift lever to (L), select the gear you want (4 or 5) for in town and it will still automatically downshift when you stop but not exceed the selected gear you chose after driving again. 5. Seats with tilting headrests 6: Plenty of interior lights logically placed 7: Tilt and telescope steering. Every car needs this. 8: Under seat storage (rear) that is now standard. 9: Easy lower and lift tailgate 10: Tie down hooks placed where they should be (lower in the bed) 11: Factory bed rail and tailgate caps (and stake pockets like the old trucks had) 12: Fuel mileage is great (26 MPG). Where else will you get that kind of mileage with a vehicle that can tow 7,000 pounds? Overall, GM got the truck right, but the follow up service, not so much.

Radio is obnoxious and it downshifts too late

The radio is the worst part about this vehicle. It is constantly clicking itself and putting weird screens on. This is very annoying and is a distraction, increasing the risk of a crash. It also doesn’t work a lot of the time when you press it to change channels and just acts dead. Steering wheel also sets the radio off even when your hands aren’t on the buttons. Plus it does not downshift early enough up hills and often lugs down to 1k rpm before downshifting which takes it out of the power range and makes the engine shudder. It also seems too high geared in general for a truck. Other than that it seems to be a nice truck but these issues completely ruin it. It looks great, handles well, and has a comfy interior, and these issues make me sad because it would be a good truck if they had just made a few improvements to certain areas. The radio system especially is really making me want to sell it and buy something else.

Issues with differential

My rear differential had to get replaced (many others have the same issue). My menchanic said this is rare for a truck with 80,000 miles. Beware!!!

2017 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab

Purchased truck because it looked great on the show floor, had a lift kit with big tires, and beautiful black rims on it. But then at 24,000 miles it started shaking and jerking for no reason, came to find out on my own that it was called the "chevy shakes", supposedly they had put the wrong transmition oil in it and all it needed was a flush and the right kind of tranny oil. Wrong. Had to repeat every 30,000 miles and now I have a dead tranny that I have to replace out of my own pocket, because they did what they were supposed to do. Flush it. Never again will I purchase a Cheverlet or any, supposedly american made vehicle, learned my lesson. There are a couple Lawsuits in California against the same issues, but different Chevy models, all bad tranny's in them.

My Dream truck - 2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2 DIESEL.
Pros

Great Fuel range

I fully knew what I was getting. I ordered it right before the full Pandemic hit. I ordered every extra I could get on this Electric Blue dream truck, and I wasn't disappointed. I signed for it on April1st 2021 and almost 4 years later it still turn heads on the roads. Premium sound, 8"screen and 2.8L DIESEL engine made a huge difference compared to a friends ZR2 V6, There's just something about the sound of a DIESEL you HAVE to Love. It's honestly the best Truck I've ever had. Only issues I had with it was 2 wiring problems. both were covered under warranty and both done at the same time (54k miles) since I was told the wiring harness only used a certain length with no play for the wiring. An off-road truck needs a little play in the wiring or the rattling and shaking of bumps will tear the wires. If it wasn't for my current financial situation I wouldn't dream of selling it. I had hoped to keep it atleast 20 years.

Best midsize off-roader
Pros

Extremely comfy cab for a big guy, unmatched off road ability in its size/class, strong engine with great response

Cons

Gas mileage. It’s a truck like trucks used to be.

Managed to find a Colorado ZR2 with 76000 miles for under 30k with a full warranty. I bought my dream truck. I’m still in a little shock. It was such an easy, pleasant experience. I honestly couldn’t be happier

2016 Colorado
8/22/2024
I take care of it and it lasts a long time
Pros

Cargo bed, 4cyl, non-turbo, 2 + door

Cons

Complex cooling system, hard to reach back of engine

I bought this truck brand new in 2016. I now have over 200,000 miles. I get between 24-27 MPG in the city and about 29-31 on highway. It has the 2.5 L 4 Cylinder engine. VVT with direct injection. 6 speed automatic. The feature I like best is that it is a non-turbo. This saves fuel, and generally is longer lasting. The other feature I like is the back seat is accessed by two small reverse open doors. It gives the truck a WT look and provides for a full length 74" bed. I had a coolant leak at the T-stat housing, in rear of engine that took a week or more to fix at about 100K. The front of the engine is easy to access but the back requires the trans to be tilted down just to get to hoses. The front end has held up and its good on tires. Replaced one control arm. I generally like to get over 200K and 14 years out of a pickup. I hope GM returns a two door option and naturally aspirated 4cyl. soon. Good reliable truck.

Surprisingly better than others
Pros

Easy to drive/park in the city, good gas mileage both in town & highway, reliable/dependable

Cons

Uncomfortable driver's seat, dealers won't honor warranty even within a few months of expiring

I've got a 2020 Colorado Work Truck trim with the WT Appearance package, 4 cyl/6 spd trans that will be 5 yrs old in Sept. '24. I've done normal maintenance to it as well as kept it's appearance equal to a 1 yr old truck and the vehicle continues to run good and be reliable. I upgraded tires to the 3 peak winter capability, added OEM mud flaps and also upgraded wheels from steel to factory aluminum. For now the truck has done everything I've asked it to and has done it cheerfully without any breakdowns or even one hiccup. Gas mileage fairly good on highway (29-33 mpg) even with a .410 rear axle and a 6 spd transmission. Its a safe and dependable vehicle, runs rings around and is much more capable than most SUVs, and since prices are too high for new ones this one is a keeper for me.
