Positive Review

"Accident Awareness"

Unfortunately recently as of yesterday my car was tottaled. I had a Chevy Aveo 2007. Ran perfect never had any problems. I loved the car because it was a great value and good quality. My parents purchased it in outlook of the safety of the vehicle. To our dismay yesterday when a car t-boned us and desecrated the passenger side of the automobile only to continue pushing it over so it landed on our drivers side, the side curtain airbags failed to show any use. Not a single airbag in our vehicle came out. Fortunately neither one of us, my mother [driver] or myself the [passenger] had any major injuries (just some scrapes and bruises from where we were hanging by the seatbelt). The car body did an ok job of holding up, yet when impacted compartments inside the vehicle also ended up broken, most likely because of the velocity of the crash. In conclusion, the car was liable and drove well, never any major complaints. I just wanted to let others know about the so called excellent 'safety' of this vehicle.

Critical Review

"Good gas mileage, bad reliability"

I've found this car to be comfortable, and surprisingly roomy for how small it is. Additionally, it has great visibility and decent power, along with great gas mileage. Despite all those positives, the car is of very poor quality. It was not made well. Parts are constantly failing and breaking. My wipers, door handle, and gas cover have all broken off during normal use. I easily spend as much keeping this car driveable as I do on car payments. I would not recommend.

Great small car!
Pros

Fuel efficiency, reliable

Cons

No AC

Have loved this car. Mine has been very reliable since I have owned it. Does great in Maine winters with a good set of snow tires. I can fill my tank for $25. Love standard transmission.

Fun to drive
Pros

Fun to drive good on gas

Cons

requires non oxy gas

This is a fun car to drive and really good on gas 36mpg. I have a 5 speed 4 door hatchback and took the back seat out so I have hatch space. I've had to replace front struts and air intake unit but other than that just drive and change oil. It does not like oxygenated gas so as long as I put non oxy in it the check engine light doesn't come on.

Compact, good on gas, not much else

I bought my ‘07 Aveo at the end of 2020, paid around $2,500 at 90k miles. Pretty good deal at the time. I was very happy with it for the first couple months, it did me well, good on gas, relatively quiet, but that’s where the good news ends. Once it came to maitenance and inspection, everytime I would get anything minor done, there was a problem. Check engine light was on 60% of the time I had it, despite making sure to fix what was needed. Every quote from the mechanic would always be well into $2,000 - I fixed what I could myself, but its definitely not a car thats worth buying, even for $2,500. I personally paid more in repairs and maitenance than I did for the car initially. The reliability on this thing is nonexistent, I broke down 3 times. If possible, I would avoid this car. The cons far outweigh the pros, I’ll break them down below: Pros: -Comfortable for small drivers -Stylish, compact -Handles nicely -Great on gas Cons: -Not reliable whatsoever -Noisy -Plasticky interior (would not be a problem if I hadn’t cut myself on it) -Expensive to repair -Cupholder is abysmal -Headlights would often go out (not due to bulbs) -Check engine lights abound I really wanted to love this car, and even now I miss it for the sentimental reason of being my first car, but it is absolutely a buy I regret.

Challenge Accepted
Pros

actually a very economical car if doing own repair

Cons

no frills; not for the feint of heart.

Did a lot of research before buying used. It's 2021. Used prices are high. Cars are hard to find. Choices slim. This 2010 Aveo5 LT manual has 106,000 miles, runs fine, looks good. will try to get it to 200,000 miles and beyond. Pros/Cons: Cheap to buy, even now. Got it for a better price than KBB, but purchased over $500 in parts to replace at the start of my journey in order to prevent potential catastrophic failure. Interference engines with timing belt; replace every 100,000 miles (pre 2008s every 60K miles). I'm doing mine right now as history is unknown. Other common mechanical failures include the thermostat, coolant reservoir cap, valve cover due to integrated PCV system, rubber intake hose after the MAF, and motor mounts. I purchased all these parts to replace due to the age on the car. My AC also has a leak so will need to fix that. Be aware, this engine is in the same family as the Chevy cruze and Chevy sonic, and both have head gasket failure issues if they ever overheat, so be sure to check the coolant reservoir routinely for loss of coolant and fix any problems in the coolant system early to prevent costly repairs. Same issues with catalytic converter failures: the Cats are super expensive on this car and will fail if vacuum leaks go untreated. That's why it is important to check the intake hose for cracks and the PCV for failure and replace immediately or you will have a dead converter and $400 part to buy. This car has poorly designed motor mounts that fail early, and the rocking of the engine leads to increased wear on the exhaust, manual transmission shift linkage, and failure of the intake hose. replace the mounts to save the other parts. I do not recommend this car for people who cannot fix their own car. As these age, they will need replacement parts, and while the parts are cheap, the labor prices are not. However, I am willing to take on this derided vehicle and am confident I can get long life out of it. I currently own of 2005 Kia Rio, another commonly hated vehicle most owners claim to be unreliable, and have 260,000 miles on it and counting. The Aveo will replace it in 2 years once the Rio has gone over 300,000 miles.

Lots of Problems
Pros

Looks cute, gas mileage, seats

Cons

Unreliable, low power, electrical issues

I bought this car used when it had about 94,000 miles and I've driven it almost 5,000 miles. I'll start with general thoughts then go into its problems. This car looks nice which is definitely a plus! It handles OK on slippery terrain, but not fantastic, so be careful. I live in MI, so snow and ice are a concern. The engine lacks power. If I need to speed up on the expressway it feels like I'm forcing the car. The car also suffers do to its low weight. It has great highway mpg, but if it's a very windy day expect to feel the car being noticeably pushed. I owned I Buick before this and never felt the wind buffeting the car so much; it's almost scary. The compact size is great for getting into smaller parking spots and, as I mentioned: great gas mileage! Seats are comfortable, and the sound system is pretty good. It handles well enough and the shocks are good. My model also has a moonroof which was a nice bonus. I've also had several issues. The first was the electrical system. The car would often have a dead battery even if it had been driven a good distance in the last week. I got around this by having a jump starter and a trickle charger on hand. Until one time my mom borrowed the car and was driving on the expressway and the car completely shut off. Had to be towed. We had the alternator and battery replaced (to 1000CCA), but still the car's battery charge is inconsistent and it's a crapshoot if it will start if it wasn't used in the last few days. There were times when I've driven it 15 miles to a family member's house then it would not start when I tried to leave and had to be jumped. We looked at every light and possible battery drain and couldn't figure it out. The digital clock in the car never keeps the time and no one can seem to figure out why, but I feel this obviously points to an electrical issue. One morning I tried to go to work and the car can't move. The rear drum brakes had completely froze. Mind you, the brakes were generally OK before this (could have used new pads, but nothing major). Had to have the car towed to the shop and brakes completely replaced. The A/C started leaking within 2 years after I got the car. I had it recharged and evaluated. Turns out the leak is in the condenser itself which means the entire thing needs to be replaced. I've also noticed that the back power windows no longer go down and I have no idea when or why this happened. Probably another electrical issue. Also had issues with steering wheel shaking/pulling. Getting the tie rods replaced and tires rotated helped, but something still isn't right and the dealership doesn't know what. Also the chrome on the front bumper has a habit of falling off. Mine was loose upon purchase and later fell of completely when I shut the hood. I didn't wouldn't think much of it, but I've seen several Aveos also missing this chrome piece.

Kidder
3/26/2021
A Minimalists Reliable City Car
Pros

27/33 MPG, Manual Trans lasts long

Cons

Doesn't hold up well in collisions.

Bought mine from a private owner for 1100 USD in March 2017. It had 198k on it and the owners swore up and down that it was taken in for maintenance on a routine basis. A 5-speed manual transmission treasure given it's mileage. It traveled virtually everywhere. Took this car all over, round trips from 120 mi to 220 mi and never had a problem. Climbing the hills of Malibu was a challenge as steep hills are something to expect when driving stick but it never bothered me much. Common issues for me was having to replace the wheel bearings every year but at least it wasn't a major issue. Only work I did on it was the valve cover gasket and the two motor mounts (transmission mount and bottom motor mount). Just lost the poor little guy because a driver pulled out of the intersection in front of me which put me in a T-bone collision w/ a Ford F-150 transit. The crash destroyed my front left quarter panel and deployed the air bag. If I could, I'd want my kidder back but, collisions of any magnitude will wreck this type of car. Still, great gas mileage, easy repairs, and a hatchback with enough space for a dog or two with the back seats down. Really gonna miss my car.
