There are a handful of cars that are just absurd. Not in a bad way, mind you. Absurd in the sense of, as Webster’s defines it, “ridiculously unreasonable.” The automotive equivalent of dinner at Mirazur (in the French Riviera, rated the best restaurant on Earth in several publications), where the bread that appears before you order comes with a Pablo Neruda poem, and the bill that appears after you finish rivals your mortgage payment.
Case in point, the Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63.
It’s one of the world’s most capable off-road vehicles. Military forces on every continent but Antarctica use them to go where roads don’t. But under the hood is a twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V8 worthy of a race car, so it gets from a standstill to highway speed in under four seconds. And the interior is opulent – supple Napa leather and galvanized steel touchpoints instead of plastic. It genuinely seats four adults comfortably.
It’s pretty near the peak of what 2020 automotive design can do when given a blank check. And it’ll cost you about $150,000. Or a $10 donation, and some luck.
Omaze, the fundraising organization that helps nonprofits pay their bills through implausible online raffles that frequently have an automotive bent, is offering up an AMG G 63 and $20,000 cash, with even taxes and shipping costs covered.
This one benefits the Black Voters Matter Fund, which works to register underrepresented voters and drive voter engagement. As always, you can enter without a donation, too. This one closes in just over a month, so get your entry in by January 13, 2021. The winner will be announced just two weeks later.
