The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe is slotted between Hyundai’s Tucson and the Palisade SUV and competes in a crowded field of midsize crossovers like the Ford Edge and Nissan Murano. It’s good on fuel economy, has a comfortable and nicely designed cabin, and it looks more expensive than it is. That’s especially true in the upper trims where it can reach luxury status. The Santa Fe also includes Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
It offers three engine options. The Santa Fe gets a choice of two combustion engines, including a 2.5-liter inline-4 that makes 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, and gets EPA city/highway rating of 25/28 mpg; and a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4 that makes 277 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque and gets 22/28 mpg (city/highway). You can also opt for an all-new hybrid or plug-in hybrid variant of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe. Both get a 1.6L turbocharged hybrid powertrain that uses a unique 6-speed automatic hybrid electric transmission.
All Santa Fe models have a max towing capacity of 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.
New Trim for 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe
For 2022 the Santa Fe gets a new trim, the XRT, which gives it a more rugged appearance with some exclusive side moldings and wheels, lots of black exterior bits, roof rack, and side steps. Don’t let the looks fool you, though; the XRT receives no mechanical upgrades that make it more off-road capable.
At the base, the Santa Fe comes with Hyundai’s SmartSense suite of safety features, including lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, and driver-attention alert. You also get adaptive cruise control, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, dual front and rear USB ports, trailer sway control, backup camera, alloy wheels, LED headlights, automatic headlights with high beam assist, and stain-resistant cloth seats. This standard package also includes a standard 8-inch infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Eight Trim Levels
The Hyundai Santa Fe is available in eight trims. They include base Santa Fe SE, SEL, Limited, and Calligraphy. These models can come in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive—where the latter costs an additional $1,700. The hybrid and PHEV come in Blue Hybrid, SEL Premium Hybrid, Limited Hybrid, SEL Plug-in, and Limited Plug-in Hybrids.
Pricing starts at $27,200 for the base Santa Fe SE and tops out at $45,360 for the Santa Fe Limited Plug-in Hybrid. Destination charges for all models are $1,185.
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited ($38,950) is our choice for that sweet spot between base trim and top-shelf features and prices. This model gets the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine that we recommend if you need to haul more passengers or cargo. It also includes park distance warning both front and back, power-folding side mirrors, LED headlamps, ventilated and heated front seats, and a premium finish grille. Rounding out the package are a hands-free power liftgate, dual automatic temperature control, rear occupant alert, and power-folding second-row seats.
