Which 2022 Hyundai Elantra is Right for Me?

It’s almost hard to believe, but 2022 represents the 30th year of Hyundai Elantra sales in the U.S. The 2022 Hyundai Elantra represents the second year of the seventh generation and has already been named a KBB Best Buy for 2021. If you’re in the market for a compact sedan, there’s a 2022 Hyundai Elantra for you, with models ranging from the comfortable to the downright sporting, with even a hybrid thrown in for good measure.

The main engine in the 2022 Elantra is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder connected to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). With only 147 horsepower, it’s not a thrill ride, but it’s sufficient for city driving and returns an impressive 41-43 mpg on the highway depending on the trim level. The Elantra Hybrid uses a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. Power is sufficient, with mileage ranging from 49-52 mpg city and 52-56 mpg highway.

On the other end of the segment are two performance models, the N Line, with a 201-hp 1.6-liter turbo, and the Elantra N, whose 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 276 horsepower. Not yet available, the Elantra N will go on sale in the winter of 2021 with an estimated price of $30,000.

The Elantra’s interior comfort is good, with legroom more like that of a midsize sedan and a roomy 14.8-cubic-foot trunk. Standard features include cloth seats and air conditioning, with the higher trims getting amenities such as leather seats, a larger display, and an 8-speaker Bose audio system. As with all Hyundais, the 2022 Elantra comes with a class-leading 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Seven Trim Levels

With four choices of engines, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra is broken down into seven trim levels. The SE, SEL, and Limited are powered by the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. There are two trims with hybrid power, Blue and Limited. On the performance end of the spectrum are the N Line and the top Elantra N.

The bottom trim 2022 Elantra is the SE, but despite a starting price of only $20,855 ($19,850 + destination), it comes well-equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and four speakers. Also included are safety features like forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assistance.

The next trim up is the SEL starting at $22,105, which adds keyless ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, Hyundai BlueLink connectivity, satellite radio, and a 6-speaker stereo system. Just above that is the Blue with the hybrid powertrain. It adds heated seats and side mirrors on top of its fuel-sipping powertrain.

Then come the performance trims, the N Line and the forthcoming Elantra N, and at the top, the Limited and Limited Hybrid, with such things as leather seats, a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless phone charging, and an 8-speaker Bose audio system. Note that the trims with the larger touchscreen require a wire for Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
