The 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback is the latest edition of one of the most ubiquitous cars on the road today. The Civic has been a top-seller since 1973, notching over 12-million in sales. New for the 2022 model, Honda revitalizes design aesthetics from previous versions, bringing them back with a refreshed look. These include new fenders, a clamshell hood, and a lower beltline. The result is a larger greenhouse that gives the driver increased visibility from inside the cabin. A new liftgate design provides a wider, lower opening for easy loading. The Civic Hatchback swallows up to 25 cubic feet of cargo, compared to the sedan’s 15 cubic feet. While it shares the Civic sedan’s platform, the hatchback measures 4.9 inches less in overall length.
The interior of the Civic Hatchback Touring includes upper-class attention to detail. Leather upholstery, a 9-inch infotainment system with an available Bose 12-speaker premium audio system, and digital gauges all do their part to carry out this top-shelf appearance.
Beneath the Hood
A choice of two engines powers the 2022 Civic Hatchback. The standard unit is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder making 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. The more powerful option is a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder delivering 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Both engines employ an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT), with available paddle shifters. A 6-speed manual is optional on the Civic Hatchback Sport and Hatchback Sport Touring trims.
The base Honda Civic LX hatchback to starts at $22,900 plus $1,015 destination. It’s equipped with the 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, the CVT, and the Honda Sensing safety suite. Other features include a 160-watt 4-speaker audio system and a 7-inch color touchscreen display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity.
Four Honda Civic Hatchback Trim Levels
The 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback will be available in four main trim levels: The Civic LX Hatchback, Sport Hatchback, EX-L Hatchback, and Sport Touring Hatchback. Buyers will find more upscale features as they climb the trim ladder to the top Civic Sport Touring hatchback, which prices out at around $29,400, plus destination.
We think most buyers will bypass the base trim level to start with the Honda Civic Sport Hatchback, which begins at $24,100. However, our choice would be the Civic EX-L Hatchback, which costs $26,600. That extra $1,500 brings a more powerful 1.5-liter turbo engine, Blind-Spot Information System, a one-touch power moonroof, and a 180-watt 8-speaker audio system.
