Volkswagen and its Audi luxury division have recalled 60,490 vehicles because their gear levers may not accurately indicate when they are in the Neutral position. This could allow the vehicles to roll when drivers assume they are parked.
Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2021-2023 Volkswagen ID.4
- 2022-2023 Audi Q4 e-tron
- 2022-2024 Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback
The company tells federal safety officials that the recall applies only to cars with a specific software version. On those vehicles, the company says, the N gear position may not display when the car is in neutral. That could lead drivers to assume they were successfully parked when the cars could still roll.
Dealers will update the software to fix the problem. Because these vehicles cannot receive software updates over the air, owners must bring them to the dealership to have the download completed.
Recall repairs are always free.
