Volkswagen has released more details about the sporty version of its smallest crossover SUV, the T-Roc R. The diminutive T-Roc and its R-inspired sibling are not headed to the U.S., although VW says a small SUV in a similar vein is being separately developed specifically for the American market.
Developed by the German automaker’s performance unit, Volkswagen R, the VW T-Roc R has a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 295 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That output delivered to all four wheels through a 4Motion system coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. VW claims 0-62 mph acceleration of 4.9 seconds and a top speed limited to 155 mph.
R Design cues
The VW T-Roc R is distinguished by a unique radiator grille that sports a polished silver band of anodized aluminum, R logo badging, body-color front and rear bumpers, a rear diffuser with double-tipped exhaust outlets, 18-inch alloy wheels with 19-inch rims as an option.
Inside, there’s white ambient lighting, more aggressively bolstered sport seats, leather-clad sport steering wheel with sequential shift paddles and stainless-steel pedals and door sill inserts. VW is touting the T-Roc R’s performance bona fides by testing the vehicle on Germany’s famous Nürburgring race circuit.
