Cars are rolling off dealer lots with prices hitting all-time highs. The average non-luxury buyer paid more than $1,000 over sticker price last month.
But automakers don’t set their own prices. Dealers and customers arrive at final sale prices through negotiations. Some unscrupulous dealers have found ways of inflating those prices, including working with middlemen who flip the cars to shoppers at significant markups.
It gives automakers a black eye. So Ford is cracking down, with a new policy that will punish dealers who work with strawman buyers. Will it work?
