Some Toyota Tundra pickups and Lexus LX SUVs with persistent engine problems are about to undergo perhaps the most severe repair a car can get — a complete engine replacement.
Last month, Toyota and its Lexus luxury division announced a recall covering approximately 102,000 Tundra pickups and LX SUVs from model years 2022 and 2023. Owners had reported rough-running engines, knocking sounds, and occasionally, engines that wouldn’t start or suddenly lost power.
At the time, Toyota said it was still “developing a remedy” for the issue. The company knew the source of the problem: “Certain machining debris may not have been cleared from the engine when it was produced.” However, it hadn’t found a way to clear the debris and repair any damage it might have done as it worked its way deep into the engine.
Apparently, Toyota has concluded that no repair will fix the issue. The company now says, “For all involved vehicles, Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the engine with a new one at no cost to customers.”
Now that it has made its choice, Toyota plans to move quickly. The company says it will notify owners of their new engine “by late July 2024.” Five days remain in July.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely get them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. Check the easy VIN tool at our recall center to find out if your car is one of them.
