Toyota has recalled 8,057 Corolla and Corolla Hybrid cars from model years 2023 and 2024 because their steering shafts can fracture.
The company tells federal safety officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that “the upper universal joint on the steering intermediate shaft assembly may have developed cracks during the manufacturing process at a supplier.” With repeated use, those cracks can expand. Eventually, the joint may separate, leaving the driver unable to steer the car.
As the problem develops, drivers might notice “abnormal steering vibration and additional play in the steering wheel while turning.”
Dealers will replace the shaft to fix the problem.
