If you live in California, within reasonable reach of one of the state’s 42 hydrogen refueling stations, you can get a $50,000 car for less than $18,000 between now and March 31.
The Toyota Mirai is the most successful hydrogen-powered car for sale in the United States, which doesn’t make it practical for most buyers. A well-made 5-seat sedan, it borrows much of its architecture from the ultra-luxurious Lexus LS. Its cabin is stylish, borrowing elements from the Supra sports car.
But it is powered by hydrogen, which is commercially available at only 44 fueling stations in America…all but two of them in the Golden State.
The Mirai comes in two trim levels – a well-equipped XLE, with an asking price of $50,495; and a sumptuous Limited for $66,995. Until the end of the month, though, at a truly jaw-dropping discount. Toyota itself is shaving $20,000 off the price for buyers who finance through the dealership.
But the discounts don’t end there. The federal government offers an $8,000 tax incentive on hydrogen vehicles. The state of California throws in $4,500 in tax incentives of its own. Altogether, that cuts the price of the Mirai XLE to just $17,995.
Up to $15,000 in Free Fuel
If that’s not enticing enough, Toyota is also offering Mirai buyers a $15,000 fuel credit for three years, plus 21 days of free car rentals, should you need to take a trip beyond the range of those hydrogen refueling stations.
Oh, and that financing offer is available at zero percent interest for those with qualifying credit.
The Mirai remains the ultimate niche vehicle, useful only to those in a small region of the country. But a luxurious sedan for 35 percent of its usual cost? If you’re in that niche, you’re not going to beat that.
