In a bit of not-unexpected lineup simplification, Toyota has confirmed that its Corolla-based Matrix hatchback won’t be returning to the U.S. lineup for the 2014 model year. The combination of an aging platform, modest sales numbers and competition from other alternatives – including its own corporate kin, the Prius C and Scion xB/xD – led Toyota to pull the plug, at least here in America.
According to a source at Toyota, the automaker plans to continue marketing this compact hatchback in Canada, although the Canadian 2014 Matrix will retain its existing design and will not be based on the all-new 2014 Corolla sedan platform. Given that reality, one wonders how much longer the Matrix nameplate will continue to be part of the North American auto scene.
