The Toyota Supra turns 45 in 2024. Toyota will mark the sports car’s middle age with a special model, the GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition. Toyota says it’s a tribute to “the MkIV model of big-screen fame” – a reference to the bright orange 1994 Supra of 2001’s original “The Fast and the Furious.”
The Supra is 45 now, and the “Fast” saga is 10 movies deep and still going.
Neither thing is what it once was. The Supras of the 1990s were purpose-built Toyotas that made German luxury sports car builders nervous. The first “F&F” movies were low-budget affairs built around petty theft.
Today, the Supra isn’t an alternative to the Germans; it is German. It’s built in partnership with BMW at a factory in Austria. And the movies are big-budget action flicks built around physics-defying stunts and characters who are indestructible superheroes without spandex.
But 45 years will change you.
Today’s Supra is in astounding shape for someone with middle schoolers and plantar fasciitis.
Dramatic Orange or Subdued White
To celebrate the middle of its fourth decade, Toyota brings us the 2024 GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition. Toyota hasn’t announced pricing. The model is based on the Supra 3.0 Premium, which starts at $56,750. But exclusivity will drive the sticker higher.
It’s strictly a cosmetic procedure – not unheard of for 40-somethings. Toyota will build just 900 copies for the U.S.
The better half of them will wear a color Toyota calls Mikan Blast. Mikan is Japanese for orange. The current Supra has always looked best in dramatic chromatics. This one seems slightly deeper and glossier than the movie shade, but that suits the current model’s musculature well.
The other half will be a color Toyota calls Absolute Zero, which is an overly dramatic name for rental car white.
Either choice gets a gloss black, manually adjustable wing and graphics set higher on the doors than most sports car graphic treatments. Black mirror caps and wheels complete the look.
All 45th Anniversary Edition Supras get the 382 horsepower 3.0-liter V6 and other equipment found on the Premium trim, with the choice of a paddle-shifted 8-speed automatic transmission or 6-speed stick.
