The Most Popular Car in Your State Is…

The most popular car in your state is…well, do you live on a coast or in the center? The answer varies from state to state. Roughly speaking, if your state has a coastline, it’s probably a sedan sold by a Japanese automaker. If it doesn’t, it’s probably the Ford F-150.

The conclusion comes from a new study by Insurance broker Insurify. Researchers looked at 2.9 million car insurance applications from all 50 states in 2020 to determine the most commonly-registered models. “The vehicles with the highest number of drivers in each state were named the most popular car for their respective states,” the study explains.

Overall, the numbers show, the most common vehicles amongst Americans applying for new car insurance were:

  1. Ford F-Series pickup
  2. Honda Accord
  3. Honda Civic
  4. Nissan Altima
  5. Toyota Corolla
  6. Chevrolet Silverado
  7. Chevrolet Malibu
  8. Chevrolet Impala
  9. Toyota Tacoma
  10. Honda CR-V

Before you draw any conclusions about car shopping from the data, we should caution that today’s Americans keep their cars longer than ever before. The average age of cars on America’s roads is approaching 12 years. Any study of the cars Americans insure is mostly a study of their previous purchases.

Last year, for instance, America’s 10 best-selling vehicles included more SUVs than sedans, yet there is just one SUV on the list. The Toyota Camry, America’s best-selling sedan for the last decade, doesn’t appear anywhere.
