Tesla: Vote on New Supercharger Locations

Tesla SuperchargerTesla operates America’s largest electric car charging network and wants you to vote on where it should build new Supercharger stations.

Tesla Charging – an official Tesla account that tweets out the locations of new Supercharger sites and other charging-related news – asked Twitter users late last week to nominate locations for new chargers. The account says it will aggregate replies with the most likes into a poll.

It’s not clear whether the approach will last just one round or be repeated. Tesla adds new Supercharger sites regularly. With the company’s reputation driven by word of mouth on the Internet more than advertising, polling Twitter users to plan the network seems like the most Tesla idea Tesla ever Tesla-ed.

No independent agency tracks the size of charger networks, and several make similar claims about being the leader. But Tesla has the most substantial claim, with more than 35,000 charging stations and at least one in every state. Yes, there’s one location in Alaska, though that raises obvious questions.

Tesla Superchargers, at the moment, can charge only Tesla cars. The company uses a proprietary plug and doesn’t allow adapters at its charging stations. The White House has announced that Tesla will open its network to other brands’ owners “later this year.”

We should note, however, that Tesla CEO Elon Musk made the same promise last year and never followed through. Opening the network to other brands might involve reprogramming the chargers to work with adapters and either providing adapters or creating a system to test and approve them for use.
