Tesla Recalls 125,000 Over Seat Belt Warning

2024 Tesla Model 3 driving down a road.

Tesla has recalled 125,227 cars because they don’t prompt drivers to fasten their seat belts when law requires them.

Recalled models include:

Federal law requires cars to give audible and visual reminders to alert the driver when their seat belt is unfastened. Tesla vehicles sometimes do, but if a sensor that detects a driver in the driver’s seat fails, they will drive without a warning.

Telsa says it knows of no accidents or injuries, but at least 104 warranty claims related to the problem.

The company will fix the problem with an over-the-air software update designed to signal the seat belt warning anytime the ignition is on and the seat belt is not fastened.

Recall repairs, by law, are free. Automakers recall many cars, often more than once, during their lifespans. When the cars require a physical repair, the automakers try to contact every owner to bring them in. But they don’t always reach them all. In this case, Tesla will fix the issue remotely.
