Tesla issued a second recall for 9,136 early Model X SUVs because two pieces of roof trim can detach and fly off in traffic, and an earlier attempt to secure them may not have fixed the problem.
Unlike traditional automakers, Tesla doesn’t sell its cars in distinct model years. But the automaker says every recalled car was sold between the model’s late 2015 launch and July 31, 2016.
The company recalled the cars once previously to fix loose roof trim. Technicians inspected the trim and reapplied adhesive, if necessary. But the company now says the inspection didn’t find every car that needed new glue.
So they’ll do it all again but pull on the trim “with a considerably higher force” to determine whether it’s properly attached. If necessary, they’ll reapply the adhesive.
Recall repairs are always free.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. They try to contact every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair. But they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
