Tesla Re-Opens Roadster Reservations

You can reserve a Tesla Roadster again. All it takes is $50,000 up front and a lot of patience.

Tesla has re-opened reservations for its upcoming high-performance electric 2-seater. Reserving one requires a $5,000 deposit immediately and another $45,000 within 10 days. A note on the reservation page says at least some of that money is “fully refundable” but doesn’t make clear whether that refers to one or both of the two payments.

Few outside Tesla know much about the Roadster. Tesla has said its final price will be around $250,000. The company released digital renderings of the proposed car nearly five years ago but has never shown a prototype.

The Roadster has been delayed several times, but CEO Elon Musk told attendees at the grand opening of the company’s new factory in Austin, Texas, this week that it will go into production in 2023. Musk made the same promise about the company’s radical Cybertruck electric pickup.

While some skepticism is in order anytime a company asks for interest-free loans for an indefinite amount of time, we’d be remiss not to note that Tesla became America’s best-selling luxury automaker last year. The company builds the two best-selling electric vehicles in the world.
