Tesla May Have Halted Orders on Model S Plaid Plus

Tesla S is fast charging electric car

Tesla’s updated Model S is on the way, promising a top-of-the-line trim that will be one of the quickest cars ever produced. Tesla has quoted a 0-to-60 mph time of 1.99 seconds for the Model S Plaid Plus, which carried a $149,990 price tag.

Carried. Because it has disappeared from Tesla’s website.

Here, a bit of explanation is in order. Tesla has no public relations department. It communicates with the press solely through CEO Elon Musk’s Twitter account and the occasional note to investors.

The company also doesn’t produce cars in model years like most automakers. It updates cars regularly throughout a production run. The new Model S is the first time Tesla has introduced a redesigned car, and the company isn’t giving it a model year designation. The company simply started taking orders for the redesigned car.

As of this morning, the Plaid Plus model appears in gray on Tesla’s website. Customers can no longer click on the link to order one.

This likely means that the company has enough orders to complete its scheduled production run for now. It will probably begin taking orders again eventually. But, until Musk chooses to explain the website change, we can’t tell you for certain why it’s no longer possible to order the Plaid Plus.

We’ll let you know if the website changes. Tesla has scheduled a launch event for the new Model S on June 3, which is probably the next time reporters will get the chance to ask Musk what has changed if he hasn’t addressed the matter by then.
