Forget the horsepower wars. Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers have now fully engaged in the gaming wars.
Tesla has added Steam integration to new Model S sedans and Model X SUVs.
The addition comes as part of Tesla’s annual holiday update — which in prior years included useful features like battery temperature management to improve range in cold weather and playful ones like a light show mode that flashes the lights to the rhythm of music (when parked).
This year, the headline additions are Apple Music and Steam integration. Adding Steam capability lets owners download and play complex games with a third-party gaming controller, including the units that ship with Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
Steam can be added to Model S and Model X vehicles from model years 2022 or 2023 with at least 16GB of RAM.
The move comes shortly after a Sony/Honda partnership announced plans to build electric cars with PlayStation-like entertainment systems.
General Motors, meanwhile, has shown off a concept car built entirely around the idea of a gaming space. BMW says it will add games to some of its vehicles next year through a partnership with AirConsole.
