Terrafugia Transition Production Prototype – 2012 New York Auto Show

A late addition to the exhibitor list, the Terrafugia Transition spread its wings at the New York International Auto Show in production prototype form. The product of a small aerospace development and engineering firm based in Woburn, Massachusetts, this composite and alloy two-seat, personal “Street-Legal Airplane” has already successfully completed an extensive series of drive and conversion testing as well as preliminary flight trials.

Fitted with a 100-horsepower Rotax 4-cylinder engine that drives a pusher prop, and boasting articulated power-folding wings, the Terrafugia Transition can quickly convert from a 35 mpg rear-drive car to a light sport aircraft that cruises at 105 mph and flies over 400 miles on a single tank of gas. Terrafugia Transition pricing is set to start at $279,000, and the company anticipates completing all remaining flight tests and starting the first customer deliveries within 12 months. Over 100 interested parties have reportedly put down a $10,000 deposit to secure their spot in line for a production Transition.
