- Small crossover shows new design direction
- Blends sporty and rugged design cues
- Hints at next generation Crosstrek
Subaru unveiled a concept it says points to the future design direction for the Japanese automaker. Called the Subaru Viziv Adrenaline Concept, the vehicle is a sporty, yet rugged take on the small crossover SUV embodied in the current Crosstrek. Viziv is Subaru’s coined term for “Vision for Innovation.”
The company had nothing to say about the mechanicals, since the show car is primarily a design exercise. It is a further evolution of a design philosophy that traces back to the “Dynamic x Solid” concept as a core value for the brand. This latest version of the philosophy is putting the emphasis on a bolder look, as seen by the edgy character lines and muscular stance of the Adrenaline concept.
Innovative roof structure
One of the new elements in this evolving styling approach is the roof, which is used to reinforce the body structure, flows into the spoiler atop the rear hatch. It has two glass panels to let additional light into the cabin.

Adding to the rugged look of the Viziv Adrenaline is the extensive use of body cladding. It starts up front with the matte black look surrounding a front skid plate, carries over onto the sides where the front wheel arch cladding also serves as the front fenders. It continues through the lower rockers, over the rear wheel wells and across the rear of the vehicle, which is also fitted with a second skid plate. The intent of this design is to showcase the vehicle’s agility and off-road capability and encourage, in the company’s words, its customers to “drive freely in mother nature.”
While you’re waiting for this concept’s design themes to show up on a production car, consider buying the current Subaru Crosstrek, which earned a KBB Cost-to-Own Award this year.
