Still Cheap but Fun — Toyota GR86 Price Stays Under $30k

2022 Toyota GR86Cheap and cheerful sports cars are an endangered species. But Toyota has done its part to keep the category alive. The 2022 Toyota GR86 will offer agile, rear-wheel-drive fun for just $27,700 (plus a $1,025 delivery charge).

More Power, Updated Style

We’ve known the mechanical details on the GR86 since early summer. But a refresher is in order.

Power jumps from 205 horsepower in the former model to 228 in all-new 2022 version. The power bump comes thanks to a larger, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine provided by Subaru (the GR86 shares most of its parts with the similar Subaru BRZ). Power goes to the rear wheels through either a short-throw 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota says the new GR86 will get from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds with the automatic gearbox, or 6.1 with the manual (in the hands of a skilled driver).

Handling Boosts

But inexpensive sports cars depend more on handling than power for their reputations. Accordingly, The 2022 GR86 uses a stiffer chassis, retuned electronic power steering, and retuned suspension in a bid to provide nimbler handling.

A larger, bolder grille, wider fenders, and a new lower sill extension that snugs the car to the ground visually make it a more attractive machine.

Just Two Trim Levels

Toyota keeps it simple for buyers with just two trim levels.

The standard GR86 ships with push-button start, an 8-inch central touchscreen display, and a 6-speaker audio system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wired connection only).

The Premier trim adds two more speakers, heavily-bolstered racing seats upholstered in grippy Alcantara faux suede, aluminum sport pedals, and a larger duckbill spoiler for added downforce.

Other Customization Options

Should you want to customize your GR86 further, Toyota dealers can install various official Gadzoo Racing accessories. They include a performance exhaust system, a cold air intake kit, and additional strut tie braces, and performance stabilizer bars. Black fender vent inserts are available to upgrade the look.

Complimentary Track Coaching

Every 2022 GR86 buyer gets a free 1-year membership to NASA. Not that NASA. This is the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). Membership includes one free track coaching session at a NASA High Performance Driving Event and discounted admission to future sessions.
