Trucks have been growing for many years. 2021 may be the year that trend finally reverses. Both Ford and Hyundai have introduced compact pickups – something the U.S. market hasn’t seen in nearly a decade. The Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz bring back a long tradition of affordable small trucks. Now, another old familiar style is coming back.
Chevrolet has announced that it’s bringing back the smallest version of its full-size Silverado 1500. The recently-refreshed 2022 Silverado will be offered in a 2-door, 2-seat, short-bed configuration for the first time since the 2018 model year.
But if you’ve been waiting for a short-bed off-road Trail Boss model with creature comforts and customizable style, don’t celebrate yet.
“Please note that regular cabs are only produced on the WT trim,” a Chevy spokesperson told GM Authority. A bare-bones “work truck,” the WT features cloth seats, a two-speaker stereo, and a tiny 3.5-inch monochromatic screen.
American factories manufacture single cab, short-bed Silverados in RST and Trail Boss trims. But dealers won’t sell them in the U.S.
We should note that neither Ford nor Ram have announced plans to offer a regular cab version of their full-size truck with the shortest available bed for 2022.
