Electric truck startup Rivian is offering its R1T pickup truck with an EPA-certified range of up to 410 miles and its similar R1S SUV with a range of 400 miles.

Cox Automotive, the parent company of Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader, is a minority investor in Rivian.

The move instantly makes the pair the longest-range electric truck and SUV on the market, though they may not keep the title for long. The longest-range electric vehicle (EV) of any kind remains the Lucid Air, with an EPA-certified range of up to 520 miles in one configuration.

The range doesn’t come cheap. It requires buyers to add Rivian’s “max pack” battery, which adds a whopping $16,000 to the cost of either vehicle. That’s nearly enough to buy a Nissan Versa as a second car instead.

That gives the least-expensive R1T with the max pack an $87,000 sticker price and the equivalent R1S a $92,000 price tag.

And it’s not available with the quad-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) system that makes Rivian’s pair some of the most capable off-roaders on the planet. The company scratched the 4-motor/max pack configuration from its plans last year in an attempt to simplify the production process.

But the big battery comes paired with either the dual-motor AWD or performance dual-motor AWD setup. Either gets the maximum range figure.

Rivian may lose the title when the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV reaches the market, likely next summer. GM has claimed the electric Silverado will boast a range of up to 450 miles.
