Toyota has brought back the Land Cruiser name after a brief hiatus. The new model retains all the rugged off-road capability of Land Cruisers of old. But it moves into a smaller, less expensive market segment than the full-size, 3-row behemoth that last wore the name in the U.S.
The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser was an outstanding off-roader. But it was about as big as an off-roader can get, drew power from an inefficient V8 engine, and cost nearly $90,000.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is a smaller, 5-seat SUV. Like every generation before it, it’s built for the trail. Even base models get meaningful off-road gear like center and rear-locking differentials and Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select system that works in both 4-wheel-drive (4WD) high and 4WD low. An available front stabilizer bar disconnect mechanism improves suspension flex on the fly.
But it adds hybrid power – 326 horsepower from a 2.4-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor. And it gets creature comforts like standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated seats even in the base model, and an available 14-speaker JBL premium audio system.
A Cool Nostalgic Touch in the Base Model
The Land Cruiser badge has adorned many vehicles since it first appeared in 1958. It’s been a little 2-door model you could mistake for a classic Jeep. It’s been a full-size 8-seater with a price and feature list to rival a Lexus. And it’s been everything in between.
Overseas, this new model is known as the Land Cruiser Prado, where the big Land Cruiser that left the U.S. market in 2021 is still sold. The new one borrows lines from the fondly remembered late 1980s FJ62, updating them for 2024 tastes.
But, in a nostalgic nod we love, Toyota will offer it with retro-inspired looks. The base trim is now called Land Cruiser 1958 and wears round headlights inspired by the original and a grille with the classic 1950s Toyota logo front and center. More expensive trims get square headlights.
