Jaguar has long been public about its plans to become an all-electric brand by 2030. The company may have accelerated the schedule because of a glut of inventory.
Joe Eberhardt, North American president and CEO of Jaguar’s parent company JLR, tells Road and Track, “The majority of our products cease production in June, but they will be on sale for a much longer time.”
The company believes it can produce enough gas-powered cars by June to “have a continuous supply of vehicles until the new cars come.” Eberhardt didn’t explain what he meant by “the majority of our products” but added, “The plan is to sunset the current product portfolio and then launch the new ones.”
Many automakers are overstocked at the moment. For some, that means cash discounts – automakers have begun offering significant incentives to help sell new cars, though the discounts haven’t yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.
Jaguar may use its inventory to stop production of gas-powered cars sooner than planned. The company has just one electric model for sale today – the I-PACE SUV, known for its well-designed interior but a high price for its class. But Jaguar ” is planning to launch three models on an all-new platform,” R&T says. The first, a 4-seat grand tourer, should reach showrooms next year.
