Ram has recalled 6,066 pickups because their side curtain airbag inflators can rupture, sending hot metal shrapnel into the cabin.
The recall affects some, but not all, units of the:
- 2016-2019 Ram 1500
- 2016-2020 Ram 2500
- 2016-2019 Ram 3500
- 2016 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis (only those with GVWR under 10,000 pounds)
Ram believes the problem is limited to a certain production lot of inflators.
Airbags work thanks to inflators — metal capsules of compressed gasses that squirt out of a nozzle to inflate the airbag in an accident.
Ram says one batch of inflators “may have had moisture introduced into the inflator during supplier manufacturing that may cause internal corrosion over time,” which can lead to cracks in the shell. Weakened, the shell can explode.
Ram knows of no accidents or injuries but at least one warranty claim related to the problem.
Dealers will replace the curtain airbag inflators to solve the problem. Recall repairs are always free.
Manufacturers recall many cars, sometimes more than once during their useful lives. They try to reach every owner to warn them. However, some may fall through the system’s cracks and are left unknowingly driving recalled cars. Check our easy recall tool to determine if your car has any outstanding recalls.
