Recall: Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee Rollaway Risk

Dodge and Jeep have recalled 206,502 SUVs because of a problem with their anti-lock braking systems (ABS). The problem can, among other risks, cause them to roll away when parked.

Recalled models include the:

The brands tell the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a sensor in the ABS can falsely read brake pressure when there is none. This false reading can cause havoc, including brake lights that illuminate when the driver isn’t braking, the disabling of the ABS, and “a vehicle that is able to start and shift out of park without depressing the brake pedal.”

Drivers get no warning as the problem develops, Dodge and Jeep say. “However, after the failure occurs, ABS, ESC, and red ‘Brake’ warning indicator lights are illuminated at vehicle start-up, indicating the systems are not available.” They might also notice the brake lights staying on after parking the vehicle.

Dodge and Jeep say they know of no injuries or accidents related to the issue, but it has resulted in at least 553 warranty claims.

The brands are still developing a remedy for the problem. When it arrives, it will be free. By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
