Toyota and its Lexus luxury marque are conducting a safety recall affecting about 43,000 plug-in hybrid SUVs in the United States because of a wiring problem that could trigger a vehicle fire.
The recall affects some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2021-2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime
- 2022 Lexus NX450h+
Toyota explains, “A component that converts electricity voltage could be damaged in manufacturing and experience a short circuit, generating excessive heat.” In a worst-case scenario, that heat could cause surrounding components to catch fire.
The recall is not yet listed on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website. But we expect it soon. Owners should expect a notice in the mail in September.
“Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the DC-DC converter with an improved part,” the company says. As always with recall repairs, the fix is free.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. Check the easy VIN tool at our recall center to find out if your car is one of them.
