Recall Alert: Toyota, Lexus Airbags Could Fail

2022 Toyota Corolla CrossToyota and its Lexus luxury arm have recalled about 110,000 vehicles because an electrical problem in their steering columns could keep their airbags from deploying in an accident.

Affected models include some, but not all, examples of the:

“The spiral cable assembly in the steering column may lose its electrical connection on the circuit controlling the driver’s airbag,” Toyota said in a press release announcing the voluntary recall. “If this occurs, the airbag warning light will illuminate, and the driver’s airbag may not deploy in a crash.”

If the connection fails, drivers will likely see an airbag warning light on the dashboard.

The recall is not yet listed on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, but Toyota has announced it early. In September, owners should expect a notice asking them to bring their cars to a dealership for recall service.

Dealers will fix the problem by inspecting and replacing the cable if necessary.
