Recall Alert: Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid

Toyota has recalled 42,199 Corolla Cross Hybrid SUVs from model years 2023 and 2024 because their brake pedals may suddenly require more force than normal when the car is turning. That could cause an accident, as drivers don’t know to expect it.

The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that a skid control electronic control unit (ECU) helps control the brakes in turns. “Due to the programming of the skid control ECU software, there is a possibility that the brake fluid pressure may not be controlled as designed in limited situations when the brake pedal is applied during cornering.”

The brake pedal could require more force when turning than it does when driving straight, Toyota says, “causing the brake stopping distance to be more than expected and potentially increasing the risk of a crash.”

Dealers will update the software to fix the problem. Corolla Cross Hybrids can’t receive software updates over the air, so owners must bring them into the dealership for the patch. But software updates are among the fastest service appointments.
