Toyota has issued a recall alert for more than 227,000 Camrys from model years 2018-2019 to resolve a problem that could cause a sudden loss of braking power.
A part inside the cars’ brake vacuum pump can break, causing the pump to fail. If the pump fails, the brakes can still stop the car. But the brake pedal could suddenly require more force than usual to activate the brakes. Since the pump can fail without warning, this could lead to an accident.
Camry Hybrids use a different brake design that does not include a vacuum pump.
Toyota isn’t sure whether the problem has contributed to any accidents. In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company notes that it has received 61 “unverified warranty claims” that may relate to failed brake pumps.
Dealers will inspect the vacuum pump in each recalled Camry and replace it if necessary. Drivers who have already had their brake pumps replaced can ask Toyota to reimburse that cost.
