Recall Alert: Nissan Z

Nissan has recalled 4,036 Nissan Z sports cars from model years 2023 and 2024 because a pop-up engine hood meant to reduce pedestrian injuries in a collision may not function as intended.

Some of today’s cars have hoods designed to reduce head injuries in a pedestrian, should the car hit one. The Z’s hood pops up a short distance, ensuring pedestrians hit the deformable metal hood but not the hard engine components beneath it.

Nissan told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that a technician had found the pedestrian sensors that initiated the pop disconnected on a Z. On investigation, engineers found that the wiring harness that powers the sensors could pull loose. Rerouting it can prevent it from becoming unsecured.

Nissan is aware of no injuries or accidents related to the problem.

Dealers will fix it by installing a new, properly routed harness. The company has already changed procedures at the factory to ensure that the harnesses are routed correctly on future cars.

Recall repairs are always free.

Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. Check the easy VIN tool at our recall center to determine if your car is one of them.
