Recall Alert: Nissan Sentra Brake Lights May Stop Working

Nissan is recalling about 850,000 Sentra sedans and hatchbacks in North America because the brake lights may not come on when the driver steps on the brake pedal. The recall covers model years 2016 through 2019.

The problem can develop without the driver being aware of it. The issue involves silicon grease on nearby components can cause oxidation in the switch that activates the lights. A warning light may appear in the driver’s instrument cluster to indicate a problem, but the light gives the driver no clue as to the malfunction’s source.

Nissan says there are no reports of collisions caused by the defect.

Dealers will replace the switch, using a new design with a protective cover to prevent oxidation. Owners can expect a recall letter in April.

Many cars are subject to at least one recall at some point in their lifetime. Manufacturers attempt to contact every owner to tell them to bring the car in for repair. But they typically don’t have current contact information for every owner, so inevitably, some owners aren’t notified. Recall fixes are always free.
