Recall Alert: Mini Cooper SE

Mini has issued a recall for 12,535 electric Cooper SE hardtop coupes from model years 2020 through 2024 because their high-voltage batteries can short-circuit.

Mini tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that “faults may occur in the high voltage battery or high voltage system, which could be caused by various reasons. These faults may result in a short circuit.”

A short circuit can lead to a fire even when the vehicle is not operating.

The company is aware of at least two incidents, neither of which led to any injuries.

Dealers will fix the problem with a software patch. Mini explains, “This software includes a diagnostic function which detects a malfunction in the high-voltage battery (in the high-voltage system) and subsequently discharges the battery” below 30%, which could prevent fires.
