Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall alert for about 60,000 GLS-Class SUVs from model years 2020 through 2022 because their third-row seats may be unsafe in a crash.
In documents filed with federal safety regulators, the company explains that springs in the mechanism that locks the folding seatback may not have been installed properly. As a result, the seatback could come unlocked in a crash.
One of a car’s primary responsibilities in a crash is to keep everyone inside fixed in place. A seat that hinges unexpectedly could injure anyone in it. Mercedes says owners would “not receive a warning due to the nature of the failure mechanism.”
The company says it knows of no injuries caused by the problem. Mercedes discovered it when a seat supplier warned them it might have found an error in its production process.
Dealers will inspect the seat springs and replace the entire seatback if necessary. Recall repairs are always free.
